Stroller w/ Infant Question

We are planning on getting the Baby Jogger City Select. Since teh seat does not fully recline - just mostly - they say it can be used after 6 months. But why can't you use it at say 4 months. I know a lot of babies start sitting up or tripoding around that time. What is the rule? is 6+ months ot be on the safe side? Even in an infant carrier they are sitting at an incline not completely flat like a basinett. Anyway - a newbie question that hopefully someone with experience can answer.

Re: Stroller w/ Infant Question

  • A four month old trying to sit up? Not very likely.  4 month olds don't have enough muscle control to handle the bumps of a stroller.  If the stroller says to wait until 6 months, wait until baby is 6 months old.

  • My lo is 4 months and we still have her in a snap and go with her car seat. We tried it once just to see if she can handle it but she was moving around way to much. And did not look happy. I would say 6 months is a much better age

  • At 4 months old, my little one enjoys sitting up, but can not do it very well without support. Strollers do not have the support he needs. Follow the recommended age, it is there for a reason. There is a huge difference between a 4 month old, a 5 month old and a 6 month old. Some babies may be slightly ahead with milestones, but I would not rely on it without meeting your baby first.
A lot of years and a million tears finally led me to you.

  • When my son was 4 months, while he could hold his head up, there is no way in H-E-L-L he could have rode in a stroller that did not recline all the way back.  We have the Bugaboo and took him out of the bassinet at 4 months because he was nosy, but the regular seat has a flat recline and he rode with a flat recline until he was 6 months old.

  • It depends largely on the individual muscle development of the child. Starting around 4 months, my DD loved to sit supported.  We fed her baby cereal starting around that time in her high chair that didn't recline, just rolled up some receiving blankets around her waist so she would fit better in the seat.   She had reflux and HATED the flat recline of the stroller even as a newborn so we never used it in that position (except for diaper changes). We always had a slight incline and just used a headrest for support.   Similar to being in her carseat but a little less restrained.  I don't jog with a stroller but I wouldn't have attempted this until she was older than 6 months and had stronger muscles.  My nephew could barely hold his head up at 4 months and could never have sat up even with support at that age.  They're all different....  I think you need to plan on having something with a flat recline and decent shock absorption for bumpy walks until they are 6 months.   You may not use the flat recline that long but at least you would have it if you needed it.
  • Thank you for the feedback. I plan to use the infant seat with the stroller so it isn't an issue, I was just curious what the difference of a slight incline vs completely flat was. I guess the difference with the infant seat is it has all the head and body support even if it is at an incline.
