Wow! Kudos to you if you are considering one. I am a bit of a coward and I do not like pain LOL. I'm also paranoid so I want to be in a hospital in case something goes wrong.
I wish I could help you but I do not know anyone that has gone through that.
My friend Erin just had her 2nd homebirth! I think they do it to avoid the cost of the hospital cause they have crappy insurance. I personally think it is too risky, but she swears by them.
This actually crossed my mind when I was thinking that when I have baby #2 I would have to be away from A. BUT being that I already had baby #1 I know I'm not going through with my next one without an epi. BUT I have heard great things about it (I only know 1 person who did it and she had an at home water birth).
One of my friends had a home birth, one of my aunts and 5 of my cousins have had home births. One of them needed a c-section, and they went to the nearest hospital and did the c-section. All the rest had great births. They would not have done it any other way.
My friend had her daughter here in Miami two weeks before my daughter's birth. She had a certified nurse midwife and a doula, and she gave birth in her own bed. She put a shower curtain over the mattress, then covered that with a mattress pad and sheets (which she threw away after the birth). She had a healthy pregnancy with no complications, and her birth went really well.
Our Bradley instructor had 2 home births and so did our doula. After the birth of our son (natural, in the hospital) I was considering a home birth for our second when we have another baby. But DH is a little too hesistant to try a home birth, I might be able to convince him of a birth center birth, though.
Good luck if that's what you decide. You'll need a good midwife, doula, coach/hubby, and a sound back-up plan. We labored at home as long as we could before going to the hospital, and we were only at the hospital for 2 and 1/2 hours before the baby was born.

Is there a birth center anywhere near here? I was looking and couldn't find one. I hate hate that I'm probably going to have to deliver at Jackson.
I know two sisters who each had homebirths. One went very well, the other not so much (I'll spare you the details). A coworker had her nine pounder at a birthing center in water. It's definitely not for me, too risky for my blood. Do your research and find a reputable midwife and/or birthing center. I think you could even find some stories on youtube.
My friend is actually writing a book on home birth. Her NY midwife was the same one in Ricki Lake's BOBB. She had a great water birth. She occassionally will mentor someone interested in home birth.
Our second baby will probably be born at home if everything goes well. My DH is actually pretty excited about the prospect! LOL
ditto Virginia about getting a good midwife and doula. We have recs if you need them. If you are interested in a water birth, you can order a birth kit that contains much of the medical supplies and birthing tub (rental).
The Hollywood Birth Center is great. They have tours just about every Saturday. Many of my friends have given birth there.
Pretty much everything that is available to you at a birth center is also available when a midwife comes to your home. They have all kinds of emergency supplies. It's just where your personal comfort level is.
Studies in other countries have shown that home birth is just as safe or in some cases safer, than a hospital birth. You must be low risk to qualify for a home birth. HB Midwives won't take someone that should be in the hospital.

Do you know that Jackson is a high risk hospital? It's probably more difficult to have a natural birth there than some other more natural friendly hospitals.
Is there a reason you are thinking about delivering at Jackson?

I second Hollywood Birthing Center. Matthew and I were present when my SIL had her baby. It was a water birth and it was just amazing!!! I think we might go that route the second time.
I met a woman in my prenatal yoga class who had her kids at the Miami Maternity Center. I've never been, but I'm told it's not in the best area, which is why my one friend who had a home birth decided not to try it. Then again, I had my first kid at South Miami Hospital and almost got my car broken into, so who knows.
