eating caesar salad while pregnant

Hi girls, congrats on your pregnancy, I am visiting from TTGP and have a random question.  I have a friend who tends to be a little dramatic and just found out she is pregnant.  She went on and on about how she ate this great caesar salad and then found out she shouldn't have eaten it because of being pregnant.  I was just wondering if this is true and what other things are on the list of things you shouldn't eat.  Good luck to all of you!

  • I am not sure about that.  You can't eat raw fish (sushi) but I think the sardines in there are cooked or cured or something.  Maybe there are raw eggs in that dressing- I'm not sure.-

You should not eat cold cuts- like packaged or deli slices.

You should not eat soft cheeses that are not pasturized.  Never have blue cheese or brie for sure.

Of course- no alcohol/drugs and very, very limited amounts of caffiene.

There are also some herbs you should not take in large supplement doses.

    that's what I know.

  • Only if there is raw egg in the dressing, which is rare these days. Most dressings don't have raw egg in them anymore.

  • I actually just read about that online ... they say only if the dressing is made with raw eggs (most restaurants are made with raw eggs but store bought are not)

  • It says egg in the creamy caesar dressing so I steer clear of it. The regular caesar dressing doesn't list it on the bottle so I eat that one.

  • Popping in from Second Tri. Don't worry to much about what you can and cannot eat. There are a lot of things out there that people say can "hurt" or "harm" the baby. I'm sure there is something out there for every food that says you cannot have this during pregnancy.

Just have your friend ask her doctor what he says to eat and not to eat. Don't worry about the little bit of salad she ate. Even if you drink some before knowing your pregnant it's ok. Just stop drinking once you find out you are pregnant.

If you worry to much about what you can and can't eat there will be nothing out there you can eat. I still drink my coffee every morning, eat deli meats, eat fish when I want, eat med rare steak and I still use my same acne medication as before BFP. As long as you don't eat these things all day every day you will be fine.

  • I agree with wearenutts. I mean, I'm not downing raw eggs for breakfast or eating deli meat every day, but if I slip up here and there, I don't beat myself up about it. The risk of contracting bacteria from these items is actually low.  The only thing I'm really, truly avoiding is raw fish.

This is wrong. It is true that you shouldn't cheeses that are made from unpasteurized milk. But these are pretty hard to find, just read the ingredients and most of them are made with pasteurized milk, including blue cheese and brie.

I fixed your typos because I needed to.

ETA: I'm not going to start the whole "to have a sip of wine or not" conversation because I honestly do not have the energy. So it was easier to just say "true" next to no alcohol.

The thing people worry about with caesar salad is that if you get home made dressing, it might have raw eggs in it.

Anything you buy at the store, and most restaurants will have perfectly safe caesar though.

  • my salad with honey mustard dressing isn't cutting it now, thanks a lot.

your friend may be overdramatic but most of us had that "oh I shouldn't have eaten X if I'd known I was PG."  I had a subway sub with cold cuts before I knew and I didn't die or anything.  Baby is fine.  But I do avoid stupid caesar, stupid sushi, stupid raw lunch meat, stupid raw eggs, etc.  Better safe than sorry.  But almost all these things are ok most of the time, just better to avoid them.  Plenty of people eat whatever and are A-Ok.
