Did your Dr. do an u/s at your first appointment?

I have my first doctor's appointment in a week and I will be 8.5 weeks pregnant with our first child.  I have seen so many people on the 1st trimester board posting about their first ultrasounds and getting to hear the baby's heartbeat.  However, I just called my doctor's office to ask and was told that they don't normally do an ultrasound at the first visit and it is too early to hear the heartbeat.  I have been so excited for the first appointment and now I am disappointed.  I just wanted to have an ultrasound to reassure me that things are progressing normally.

Did your doctor do an ultrasound on the first visit?  Should I make an appointment somewhere else?

  • I did have an ultrasound at 8 and 12 weeks, so far.  But I know a co-worker of mine said that husband's insurance only covered 1 ultrasound for the entire pregnancy, which was at 20 weeks.
  • Thanks for your response!  Do you mind sharing who your doctor is?

  • From working for insurance company previously, most insurance companies only pay for a 20 week ultrasound in a healthy pregnancy.  HOWEVER, any ultrasound deemed medically necessary by your dr will usually be covered, and the fetal nuchal translucency exam (usually at 13 weeks) is also covered in healthy pregnancies.  At the beginning of my pregnancy I went to Midcity OBGYN, and had a 9 week ultrasound to determine exactly how far along I was and it was covered by United Health care.  If you have any questions, ask to speak with your physician's insurance liason, they are very helpful!
  • I had an u/s at my first appt at 8 weeks. It was by no means anything elaborate, just a quick check by the nurse practitioner to see the HB & size. I see Dr. Collins, offices at Clarkson & Lakeside.

  • I am one of the unlucky women that only get one ultrasound because of insurance. :/ So I think it depends more our your coverage than anything.
  • I did get one it was just to check my due date. Which was right on with my dates. But I have alot of friends that did not get them. My Doctor is Evans with Alegent
  • I had my first appointment last week.  They did not do an u/s but they did hear the heart beat!  :o) I'm seeing a midwife at UNMC

  • LOVED LOVED LOVED the midwives at UNMC, I switched to them at 15 weeks and they were absolutely amazing!
