Baby Names

Sutton

I love Sutton for a girl. The baby name books have it listed as a boys' name, but I had a female student named Sutton who was so sweet. There's also an actress named Sutton Foster. I like androgynous names, so that doesn't bother me. Her name would probably be Sutton Elizabeth. WDYT?

Re: Sutton

  • It's a boy name to me.  I like it as a boy name.  It's too masculine to be pretty on a girl IMO and I like pretty girl names.
  • I love it for a girl.

  • It's a surname, so I give it a thumbs down for both boys and girls.  Sorry.

  • I love it for a boy but I don't hate it for a girl.  I think a very classic, feminine mn (like Elizabeth) is a good idea to counter the androgyny.

    It's my surname :)

this!  I really hate this trend of naming girls using boys names...

  • I really don't like it for a girl. If I heard Sutton & Chase I would assume brothers. If I found out Sutton was a girl, I would wonder if Chase was as well.

I would choose a more feminine name but jmo...

ITA with this.  Even worse, I guarantee you there are the "I love boy names for girls" moms who are out there naming their daughters Chase.   So when you find out Sutton is a girl, you'd probably assume Chase is her sister.  At least I would.

  • I LOVE Sutton Elizabeth!  And I'm not a fan of masculine names for girls but I love that.

    Good choice.

  • NMS, but it's not too bad.

  • I love Sutton Elizabeth!
  • If heard your daughter was Sutton, I would assume Chase was, too, since to me, they are both boy names. I'm not a fan at all of Sutton for a girl.
    Blank!
  • I LOVE this name for a little girl!!!  I am a huge fan of Sutton Foster (I saw her play Eponine in Les Miserables and I love that character.  You can't name a kid Eponine, though!)

I would probably name my daughter Sutton if my last name wasn't a female first name.  I love, love, love it.  Especially with a pretty, classic middle name like Elizabeth.

  • I love it for a girl. In fact, if my DH agreed, it would be on my short list. Actually, Sutton Foster went to the other HS in my city and I had mutual friends who did theater with her.

  • I have to say...I really like it...and the negative feedback in your respnse are all from people who do not share your naming style!

No one on this board ever liked any of my names I liked, so I learned to stop asking because in real life I probably wouldnt care what they thought anyways.  You may be thick skinned, but I just thought I'd share my thoughts on the matter.  I may not post my fav names, but I am def here to be a thumbs up kinda girl to the people who share my naming style.

  • I love it! I know a girl named Sutton. Very cute!
  • I like Sutton for either a boy or a girl.  A girl in my sorority was named Sarah Sutton Lastname, and I always thought it was really pretty.

  • I really like it!!!  I like different girl names.  I really like that it's paired with a girly middle name like Elizabeth too.

  • Huge fan of Sutton Foster! Excellent choice!
  • I had this on our name list for a boy, but it is cute for a girl too.  Sutton Elizabeth is cute.  I also like Sutton Claire.
  • Love it for a girl and am a big fan of using "boys" names for girls names. My mom did too... she has three daughters named Kyle, Whitney, and Taylor. (Whitney and Taylor were both boys names when we were born in 80 and 82) and I have loved growing up with a name that isnt super popular. I am pretty sure if there was never a Whitney Houston, it would have stayed masculine like all of the baby name books had it.
  • I think Sutton is a really cute name. I've always thought of it as a boys name, but I think it's cute for a girl too.
  • I see the nickname Slutton in her future. Sorry. It's not pretty.
  • There is a bar in NYC called Sutton Place so that's what I think of when I hear Sutton.
