Do I need an umbrella stroller?

We're getting the Uppababy Vista or the BabyJogger City Select. Both of these appear to do it all...that sort of rules out the need for an umbrella stroller, right? I have no clue.

I have the Vista and still plan on getting an umbrella for when she is a bit older.  I know my DH would rather have a lighter weight, easier to handle stroller if he is out running errands with the baby by himself.

I will be getting either the UppaBaby G-Luxe or a Maclaren.

  • Umbrella strollers are good for quick shopping trips or when you will be in a crowded area and there just won't be room for a big stroller. You shouldn't use them unless baby is walking though. They have no support for floppy infants.

  • I have one and I've never used it.  If we feel the need to ever fly and take a stroller (we've been on several trips and haven't felt that need yet), an umbrella would be MUCH easier to travel with.  But, so far we haven't used it.

I just put in an order for the City Select!  We're going to use that as our double stroller, I CAN'T WAIT until it gets here!

  • Yes.  Especially now that I am pregnant, it is very difficult for me to get the regular stroller in and out of our car.

  • I think your strollers will cover all the bases. I did get an umbrella stroller w/ DS but it wasn't until he was around 8 months and we were traveling - it was just easier to pack with us.

This. We didn't use our umbrella stroller until DD was at least 18 months old.

  • You should get one because it's more lightweight and will be way easier if you are running errands or something. You don't wanna be pulling out the full sized stroller all the time.
  • Like pp said you really don't need and shouldn't use an umbrella stroller until your LO is older.  There usually in not very much support in them for newborns or young babies.  We did find it to be soooo much easier when DD got older though.  Especially for travelling.

FYI - to all of you saying you shouldn't use an umbrella stroller - it is OK to use one (usually around 4-6 months) if it has positions and you can lay the seat back.

Agreed.  Actually once PJ could sit supported we used it and it was just fine.

  • we bought one for DS when he was 8 mo and we were flying somewhere.  they're so cheap ($10-$20 for the 'cheapies'), why not have one.  they're so light and actually mine has held up great.  i mostly keep it in the car but use my bigger stroller for neighborhood walks.
  • I don't think so.  We don't have one and don't plan on getting one.  My mom has one for him and I borrowed it once when I had a friend with a baby visiting and didn't really like it.  We have Peg Perego Pliko and it is pretty light and folds up fairly compactly.
