August is a family name on DH's side. I like it, he's "eh" about it. Do you feel like if you name your kid August he needs to actually be born in August? Also what do you think about NN's Gus or Augie?
I like Augustine a little better. I do think giving a kid a name for a month they aren't born in doesn't make sense, same with names like Autumn, Summer, Noelle.
I really don't like Augie or Gus, both sound like old men to me. What about a middle name that starts with J, and you could do AJ if you are set on him having a nn.
I love the nn Gus. I actually prefer Augustus as the full name, but August is nice too. It is one of those names DH wouldn't even let make it to our list, but I love it

What do I think of August...I think it is going to be unbearably hot for me this year, pregnant and all! I will probably spend lots of time in the A/C during the month of August. In other words in is a hot month in the summer, not a name. But if it were a name, I definitely wouldn't think boy! Poor kid.

Well, seeing as the month is named after a person, I would say it is a name. Although it's a derivation of Augustus, it's a very old one. It's been used for quite a long time, and always for boys.
That said, I don't like Augie or Gus, but I do like August, Augustus and Augustine.

well, thank you for clearing that up for me..I say that with the upmost sarcasm. It is still the name of a month. Just like naming a child Paris or Brooklyn, August is terrible IMO.

Well sorry, but just because you don't like it, doesn't mean it's not a name. Unlike August, Paris and Brooklyn were not originally names for people, and have only been used as such fairly recently. I get that you don't like August, and I think that you absolutely should share your opinion on that. But it is a name. And a very traditional one at that.

No, Augustus and Augustine are the traditional names, with Augustine being the original form. And if the OP had asked about either of those, I would have given my opinion. I do not like Augustus, but love Augustine for a girl. August is a shortened version of the traditional name which then became the name of the month.
I also like Augustine too. Interesting fact... we're Episcopalian and Rowan is currently the Archbishop of Canterbury, Augustine was the first Archbishop of Canterbury. I thought that was a neat connection our boys could have if we ever named him that. I think there are at least 4 men named August or MN August on my DH's side (great grandpas and on back). I like really old fashioned and so I like it but the only part that I don't know is that it's also a month (I too hate April, June, etc. names... although for some reason I'm partial to January, maybe because of January Jones), so it's hard.
We aren't TTC btw, we just talk constantly about boy names around here .
I love August and Augustus. I think it's funny that people think it's just a month and don't realize it's rich history and meaning. Gus is adorable for a nn. Although today at Target, I saw a game called Gassy Gus, so even though it was on our list for awhile, I'm gonna pass in favor of Leo. ;-)

Fair enough. It depends on your opinion of what is traditional. I consider names used widely in Victorian times to be traditional, but I can understand an argument for a more limited definition.
i like august a lot! and for those who forgot about history, augustus/ augustine/ august/ augusta have been names for people for many many years, it's not just a month. i do not, however, like the nicknames and i don't know think you would even use one with a 2-syllable name.
eta: if he was born in august, that's the only way i would choose another name because to me, that's cheesy.

Interesting, as although Augustine has been used for girls for quite some time, it was originally a male name. I would venture a guess that Augustine has been used for girls about as long as August has been used as a first name.

I'm sorry, I'm not attacking you, I just think it's silly to claim August isn't a name. I really didn't mean to upset or offend you, so I apologize if I did.

If you were reading what I was writing, I didn't say that. What I said was that I agreed with you regarding the traditional name(s) being Augustine and Augustus. It was then shortened to August, which in turn is the name of the month. I then stated if OP was asking about those names I would have said what I thought. Which is what I did with August...a stinkin hot month. Geez, are we done here?
BTW, This board is fully loaded with "silly". Is there really a reason to make people defend themselves?
Are we talking for a girl or boy? Either way, the name is ok but I really don't like the nns. I think if he/she is actually born in August that makes it kindof dorky.
My brother's name is August. He's a fourth in our family and it just so happened that he was also born in the month of August. His nn is Auggie with two gg's and has never been called anything else.
August is a great name. And Augie is so cute. My little 2 year old cousin is named August, and goes by Augie. He was born in August, but I think it's better if they're not born in August. You might also do Auguste, like the artist, Auguste Rodin. I prefer the pronunciation of August, though.
I read a book called "Water for Elephants" (fantastic book btw) in which one of the main characters was named August, nn Auggie. Even though the character didn't turn out to be a likable person I ended up loving the name.
I agree with PP's I think it'd actually be better if the baby was NOT born in August.
My brother's middle name is Augustus but he was born in September. He is #5 in his lineage with the name so it would not have mattered what month he was born in anyway.

I love the name August. It would be on my short list for either boy or girl, except we live in St. Louis where it is associated with August Busch (as in the beer). I personally wouldn't use a nn.
Love August, think Gus is adorable. Not a huge fan of Augie, personally. And no, don't think you need to be born in August to carry the name -- almost better if you aren't.
i like august a lot! and for those who forgot about history, augustus/ augustine/ august/ augusta have been names for people for many many years, it's not just a month. i do not, however, like the nicknames and i don't know think you would even use one with a 2-syllable name.

i never said that august was the original form of the name [and i think most of us who have studied latin understand that august/ augustus/ augustine/ ausgustus/ augusta are separate names], i was just reminding the first poster who said Using months to names babies is NMS that they have all been names for people for a long time.
just because some people who hear 'august' automatically think of the month doesn't mean it is only the name of a month so i don't think that's a reason to discard it as a name choice.
i'm guessing that those considering augustine for a girl are pronouncing it aw-gust-EEN [like the city in florida] and not ah-GUST-in [like the saint]? i've never heard the first pronunciation as a name before but it could actually be pretty. i do think it would be mispronounced quite a bit, though.

Well, seeing as the month is named after a person, I would say it is a name. Although it's a derivation of Augustus, it's a very old one. It's been used for quite a long time, and always for boys.

As someone named after a month I am not a fan. I hate the questions and the jokes growing up sucked.
