Postpartum Depression

what to expect at psychiatrist appt?

I have an appointment to see a psychiatrist in two weeks. My OB started me on Lexapro, but he wanted me to see someone who could evaluate me and who specialized in treating PPD/PPA.

I have NO idea what to expect at an appointment like this. Any insight?

  • Remember that a psychiatrist is an MD and not a psychologist. Psychiatrists take a medicinal point of view to mental health - so they aren't all emotional and friendly. I've seen several over the past 15 years. That's the biggest thing I notice. They will ask you about your current symptoms (what, when, and for how long etc). They will most likely take a history of your family life growing up and your medical history.

  • Mine seemed a lot more clinical than my therapist also. My psychiatrist was chatty though but I think it was more to get a history of mental health from me than for any counseling benefit. My therapist and psychiatrist work in the same office so they are able to communicate a little easier than if they were in different offices, so the psychiatrist already had the therapist's notes, so we talked mostly medicines, symptoms and side effects. Good luck with your appointment.
  • Psychiatrist are trained in medication and therapy and aren't all cold and unemotional, LOL. I know several. Your MD will take a history and talk to you about your symptoms. It is about you and an easy process.
