Twins born at 34 weeks

I asked my OB when we would most likely be past the threat of NICU.  She said with the boys measuring on track and my having had the steroid shot, they could probably go home anytime after 34 weeks!?!?

Does this sound right? Any 34 wk old babies get to go home right away?

If their lungs are doing well, I think they can head home.  Your shot should help...and babies can also be given surfactant.  That will assist them too.  hope that helped a little...?

Yes it did- I just thought it seemed to early.  The Peri said any time after 32 weeks you avoid most complications but she didn't say anything about NICU.  I just like to have short and long term goals in my head!

my hospital sends all 34 weekers - and younger to the NICU for observation at a min.  I never had a steroid shot and my boys were in there for 13 and 16 days, born at 34w2d...mostly there to learn to suck, swallow and breath...only on cpap for the first 12hrs.

Ours were 34 weekers and had to stay in the NICU for 3 weeks. 34 weeks is still really good and evidence shows that they perform the same as full-term babies in longitudinal studies.

33w4d-my baby girl went home after 5 days, and my son 9 days.   They had one steroid shot, and just needed to learn to feed, regulate body temperature, etc.  I was SURPRISED how fast they got sent home, and the doctors/nurses mentioned being at home was the best thing for them once they got to a certain point.

The hospital where I delivered at sends all babies born before 37 weeks to the NICU for observation.  My youngest son was in the NICU for7 days and had an apnea monitor for 3 months.

I had my babies at 35 weeks on the nose and neither needed any NICU time.  We did have the steroid shot.

I think every day towards the end makes a huge difference.

My girls were 34w3d and they had no lung problems at all and still were in the NICU for 11 days, just as feeders and growers.  They have to be able to maintain their own body temperature well, they have to be able to eat from a bottle or the breast, etc.  I suppose it's possible that a 34 weeker could go straight home, but I don't know what else would have to happen to make that likely other than a lot of luck.  I mean, my girls didn't have any health problems when they were born at all, and they were there that long.  They were perfectly healthy, just early.

My twins had the shot and still needed NICU time. I was 1 day shy of 34 weeks. Lucas' breathing was amazing but he had feeding and temperature issues. I don't think they would go straight home at 34 weeks but things would be better off.

my babies went home at 35 weeks, and the tiniest was 3 lbs 15 oz. I got another round of steroid shots in the 2 days before delivery, which may have helped.

Our 34 weeker spent 15 days in the NICU. I did have the steriod shots. They were mainly feeder/growers but had to be under the bililights twice. A nurse told me 34 weekers have more trouble with jaundice than any other babies born before or after. It was def our main issue.

Oh and mine were boys- they say girls do better as preemies and usually go home faster.
