Exclusive pumper question

I'm registering this weekend and plan on exclusive pumping. Can anyone point me in the direction of the supplies I'll need: i.e best pump for this, bottles and such.

Also are you able to pump right away after LO is born or must you wait a day, a week? Any tips or suggestions are appreciated.

I don't have anyone IRL to go to with these questions. Thanks in advance.

Re: Exclusive pumper question

  • First call your insurance and ask if they will pay for your pump with a doctors note that will save you a ton of money. I would recommend a Medela I love mine and used it for DS and now for DD

  • I started pumping a few hours after LO was born in the hospital.  He was in the NICU, and they told me to start pumping asap to get my supply going & to have some colostrum to give to LO in there.  I've been exclusively pumping since.  I started with the Medela Pump in Style Advanced, but after 2 weeks, my milk started to dwindle b/c the pump wasn't strong enough.  (I talked with the lactation consultant about it & she said that pump isn't made for exclusively pumping...though maybe it's just me???)  I ended up having to rent a hospital pump (I got the Ameda b/c its what I used in the hospital & they had given me 3 sets of parts!), and my supply was up to where it should be after 3-4 days with the hospital pump.  As far as buying supplies, it was helpful to me to have bottles that screw right into the pump (I use Dr. Brown's), so I don't have to worry about transferring milk or anything. (I'm not sure if all bottles screw into all pumps?)

I have a hospital grade Medela right now but just ordered the Medela Free Style.  I pump into Medela bottles but feed out of Dr Browns.  I started pumping the day after having DD b/c she wouldn't latch.  I barely got anything for the first week but we fed it to DD with a syringe until my milk came in.

EPing is hard IMO, is there a reason why you don't want to try BFing first?

Well I really need to discuss it with my doctor or a lactation consultant and this might sound silly! But I have a a fairly large mole on my areola (been checked out and ok'd by derm) It's grown some since becoming pregnant and now I feel it's too late to have it removed for this baby. I'm afraid it will interfere with latching or that the constant feeding might damage the mole. Weird I know but these are the kinds of things I worry about. I also have to go back to work after 6 weeks and think that EP might be the best option for that. DH will be spending a lot of time with LO as will MIL and my mom. Let me know if this all sounds like senseless worry.

I really have no idea what to expect.?

This. Except I use the medela PIS. I really hate EPing :-( it's a real pain in the butt. But I want my DS to get BM.
