Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Constipation

My 7-month old keeps getting constipated. He is on Enfamil Gentlease formula and solid food-only veggies right now. I've asked the pediatrician on several occasions if I should switch his formula and see if that helps. Dr keeps telling me that no matter which formula he's on it will happen because "it's his body". I'm not sure I believe this. He gets so constipated that I have to help him go and he is in pain for days. I can't stand to watch him suffer this way. The Dr told me to give him prune juice or a special juice that he told me how to make. Baby doesn't like either no matter how sweet I make it. I tried to give him baby food prunes and he threw them up on me. Not sure what to do next, but I can't stand him to be so miserable! Any suggestions? Thanks!

Re: Constipation

  • pears helped us, so did diluted apple juice. It's so sad, I hope he gets some relief soon!

  • I would see what veggies youre feeding him. DS cant pass peas bc of the skin.
  • DS wouldn't drink prune juice either, but pears work great.  I just steamed and pureed them, but if they are soft enough you don't even need to steam them.  I've also given him Earth's Best Prunes & Oatmeal and that also helped.

  • Pear juice and pears helped us. Also I had to cut way down cereal and all things orange for a couple of days. I have heard that using karo syrup in a bottle of water helps but I have never tried it. I don't buy what the pedi told you either. Maybe try something else. It can't get any worse! GL
  • DD won't take any kind of diluted juice, so I mix a little prune juice in all of her formula bottles.  It's made a huge difference.
  • I've found that pureed pears or prunes has helped DS when he's constipated. It is hard to see them suffer...I hate it when DS is constipated too...it's like he's having a baby when he's trying to poop.  I hope your LO gets better soon.
