Babies: 0 - 3 Months

2 week old fussiness??

LO barely slept last night and woke every 1-1.5 hours to eat (normally ~2 hours or so)... and ALL day today, he's been either wanting to eat or cry.... except for about a 40 minute nap when I showered....

I've tried the Moby, feeding him 3.5 ounces in a bottle(which he downed... but is STILL crying).... rocking him, cuddling, putting him in the swing... the PnP... everything.

Any idea what's going on???

  • If you find out, let me know...I've been dealing with this for the past couple of days.  Mama just wants a few minutes of silence!
  • Loading the player...
  • same here!  I read it could be a growth spurt.  She's finally sleeping now....TMI but I even had to hold her while I went to thr bathroom (I couldn't hold it in and she was SCREAMING bloody murder)

    Ahh, the joys of motherhood

  • My LO is 10 weeks and she still fusses frequently throughout the day.  It sounds like you are doing everything you can.  Maybe he's gassy.  Have you tried gripe water or mylicon?  My sister-in-law has 7 kids and she gave me some good advice, "Get used to it!" LOL
  • If you figure out a secret let me know bc LO has been doing this for two weeks straight!!!

  • Not sure, but here are some possible things... Temp? Is he comfortable, not too cold or hot? Have you swaddled? Maybe more food, if he'll eat it...could be a growth spurt. No diaper rash? No fever?

IDK...Mine has been fussy the last few days because he's having a hard time pooping. He's not constipated, and I thought it was gas, but did some research and it seems that newborns can have some difficulty coordinating their body for bowel movements and will hold closed while pushing at the same time, making them very grumpy! This is definately what's going on with my little guy! He sounds like he's in pain, but from what information I have found so far, he is not, and will work things out in time.

  • If he / she is only soothed by the bottle or breast, it's probably a growth spurt and you are in the middle of a cluster feeding session (barring any of the medical issues mentioned so wisely by PP). We've been going through the same thing about every third day since we brought Baby Bix home. Last night he was at the breast from about 9:45pm until midnight, inconsolable otherwise. Then slept longer than normal for the rest of the night. Pediatrician said it was perfectly normal and would eventually pass.

Check out kellymom.com on cluster feeding

Also, I highly recommend The Happiest Baby on the Block book or DVD for great soothing methods. Wonderful book - highly praised by many on this board. Good luck!

  • We had our in-home visit from the nurse yesterday, and she said to expect this around 10 days- 2 weeks. It's their growth spurt, and they cluster feed for a couple of days. She said it should slow down and LO should STTN after this period. G/L!

She told you that two week olds should be STTN? I think that's BS. Most two and three month olds aren't even STTN.

  • No, I misspoke. She said I can let her STTN if she doesn't wake up on her own for feedings because her weight gain has been so good. As in, I don't need to be waking her up every 3-4 hours if she's able to sleep... And yes, I had to wake her up every 4 hours because she's been sleeping really well.

Charlotte is the same way and the same age...so you are not alone, hang in there!
  • If Charlie wants to eat every hour, I am not going to deny him that. As long as he is having regular wet and dirty diapers, and isn't spitting up lots... I don't see anything wrong with him wanting to eat often for a few days.

Okay I can get behind that. Some babies do sleep well. But be aware that sleep patterns can change quickly.

  • Let me know when you figure it out. LO will only sleep when being held, nighttime included.
