The name Lyra

I really like this name (yes, from the Golden Compass), but I'm starting to get worried. I'm seeing this name used frequently for cat names. I want to know your thoughts on this name. Is it too weird for a girl's name? Should it just be used as a pet name?  Also, how would you pronounce it. Lie-rah, Leer-ah, or some other way?

Re: The name Lyra

  • I don't like that name at all, sorry. And I would pronounce it Lee-ra.

  • Reminds me of Lycra! I would pronounce it Lie-Ra though.

    I like Lyla MUCH better!

Yes, I was thinking that Lila/Lyla is a close sounding name and certainly a more recognizable one.

I'm with j_luvs_r on this.  It reminds me of the former Italian currency when pronounced Lee-ra.

  • I pronounced it "Leer-a." It's NMS. I prefer Kyra (like Kyra Sedgewick) or Lyla (similar looking names).
  • At first glance, I would pronounce it Lie-ra.  Like Lycra.  Which is exactly what the name reminds me of.

  • I like it a lot, both for The Golden Compass & it's a constellation also. I pronounce it "Lie-ra".

I agree with PP, Lila is a good alternative if you want something easier for most people to get right.

  • I would pronounce it Lie-rah, but I am sure tons of people would pronounce it Leer -ah.  Not a fan of the name, great for a cat or a dog though.
  • DH actually chose this name, too.  I personally don't care if a name is shared with an animal as long as it's a human name.  When I gave DD her middle name of "Willow" I had a lot of people tell me their dog was named that.  I replied, "It's a great name! Lucky dog!"
