I do one side per feeding. The nurse at the hospital told me to keep a rubberband on my wrist to remember which side I nursed on last so I can alternate at each feeding. I have found I can remember pretty well and can feel which breast is more full. I like to stick with one side per feeding because I know she is able to get to the hind milk and empty the breast.
Honestly, it all depends. Sometimes he does both sides, sometimes not (but more often than not, it's both). My guy is a grazer. It can take anywhere from 45-90 minutes for him to eat. It's getting more and more frustrating as most of my time is spent feeding him!
I block feed so she eats on one side any time she eats in a given 3 hour period. That has helped with the foremilk/hindmilk imbalance I was dealing with at the beginning. I stopped timing her feedings because she has become very efficient; I just feed her when she wants to be fed and she'll let me know when she's done.
My LO nurses on one side each feeding for about 20 minutes. On some rare times she'll nurse a little bit on the 2nd side, but usually one side fills her up.
I just let him decide most of the time he does both for maybe 15-20 minutes but I don't pay attention to the time. When he pops off one I burp him and offer the other one. That's what was recommended by my LC to do.
I feed when he wants to eat. Usually every 2 hours, but sometimes it's one or three hours. He usually only eats off of one side at a time, but sometimes he'll do both. He takes between 10-20 minutes, depending.
