Safe for me to sleep sitting up while holding LO???

Okay, let me paint you the picture: Me sitting up straight on the couch or sitting up straight in the rocking chair.  I have the boppy around my middle in my lap and little one is swaddles and I'm holding her. Is it okay for me to doze off/sleep for a little while while she is sleeping like that or no? What do you think? Do you do that at all???  Just trying to catch a little sleep here and there as she likes to be held while sleeping... Go figure huh? Smile

  • I totally do.  Also sleep in the recliner while holding him on my side...Then too, I've slept with him in bed in the crook of my arm many times starting in the hospital.

  • It's not something I am comfortable intentionally doing but it has happened, unintentionally, multiple times.

About a week ago, I got up with him, brought him into the living room for his feeding at 3a.m.  He fell asleep right away and I "nodded off."

After what felt like about two minutes, I woke up and it was 6a.m.  Scared me!

Not sure what the professional opinion would be... doesn't seem safe to intentionally make a practice of that but I'm sure everyone has done this at one point or another.  I've probably done it 15 to 20 times since LO was born, already.

  • I've napped with Jack many a time, either with him sleeping on my chest or resting on a pillow on his side, or in bed with him nestled close to me on his back.

He just sleeps better when we snuggle. :)

  • sometimes its the only way i can get aiden to sleep... although usually i'm not sitting straight up - i'm reclined back in our chair and a half and aiden is asleep on my chest... he sleeps so much better that way

right now i have him in his sleepy wrap - only way i could get him  to calm down - and he is asleep and i'm about to curl up in my chair to sleep

  • we've done it.  It's not the safest thing, but you do what you gotta do to catch some ZZZZZZZ's!

  • eh..... Momma knows best. Do what you are comfortable with. I sleep with LO snuggled beside me in bed someimes (with pillows an blankets. gasp!)  I feel comfortable that I wont accidentally squish/smother her. If you feel like you know you wont drop him or anything then go for it.
  • I fall asleep with DD on my chest a lot during the day when I am in the recliner or laying on the couch and I have even fallen asleep with her in bed next to me when she is done nursing. The funny thing is when she is sleeping in the bassinet next to my bed I push it at least 3 feet away from the bed because I am worried about kicking the blankets off or a pillow into the bassinet. Doctors will tell you no but if you feel comfortable. Fair warning though I would not make it a habit taking him to bed with you my sister did that with her DS and now he wont sleep anywhere but her bed and he is now 2 and she just had twins.
  • I've done this, and in the first few days with DD home, it was almost inevitable since I was so tired.  But one night I fell asleep for an hour an woke up startled because it felt like it had only been a few minutes.  Our ped told us that she's seen some pretty bad injuries from people falling asleep with infants on them.  People move/roll or the babies fall off of their chests or out of their arms.  That was enough to scare me and now if I feel I'm falling asleep I try to change position or grab my blackberry and read emails or bump for a bit to wake me up.

  • I've done this a lot. DD falls asleep the quickest when she's being held.
