Toddlers: 24 Months+

2 years olds going thru a not wanting to eat phase?

Nicholas doesn't want to eat. At all. He already lost a lot of weight when he was sick and now he's skipping dinner most nights and not a big breakfast eater. Mainly he's eating lunch and some snacks.

He will say he wants to eat and say he's hungry but when I set him up with a meal he won't touch it. I'll even serve him his favorites knowing he will normally eat it but he isn't interested.

Is this a phase that will pass or something strange? We have a check-up soon so I'm going to ask about it but just wondering if it's a common thing.

Re: 2 years olds going thru a not wanting to eat phase?

  • Toddlers go through all types of weird eating phases- hungry, not hungry, loving something one week and hating it the next. DD typically won't eat much for dinner, which our pedi has always said is fine since she eats a decent breakfast and lunch, I would still mention it at the appt. but in the meantime if he's getting his nutrients and not dropping more weight I wouldn't worry.

  • DD's preferences change - but her appetite really does not.

UNLESS she's sick.  So I'd definitely be asking my doctor.

DD's always had eating issues, but her appetite totally changes. There could be days that I offer her anything and she'll scarf it and other days where I could offer her chocolate and ice cream and she won't touch it. In our house it's very normal.

  • There was a great post about this yesterday that got a lot of good responses.  I posted a long reply to someone yesterday afternoon who was dealing with a toddler who had suddenly become picky.

  • DS has not eaten dinner in months, except when I make pancakes and eggs.  Unless he's losing a ton of weight or your pedi's concerned, don't worry about it.  Toddlers just have funny eating habits sometimes.
