where to buy a sofa??

We need new furniture... the couch we're using now is a hand-me-down couch my uncle gave us, and although I don't want to give it away because it was a "gift" from him (he was going to toss it, it had been used like 5 times lol) it's suuuuper uncomfortable and my and Peter's (and anyone else who sits on it's) back kills after 10 minutes on it.  Soo... where should we look?  I'm going to search American Signature and Rooms to go.  I don't know anywhere else to look for a sofa/love seat set.  We want it to be good quality and something that can last for a long, long time , and also something Abby and Sarah proof.. which this couch is not.  It is so disgusting right now lol  Any suggestions?  (oh, and not too expensive... no Pottery Barn or Crate and Barrel, though I would LOVE furniture from there lol)

Re: where to buy a sofa??

  • I just bought sofas for the living and family room last week.  I got them at Ashley Furniture and Jennifer Convertable.  I never thought I would find something resonable there.  I looove my sofas!

I ended up getting a bonded leather sectional at Ashley.  It's not high maintenence like real leather.  With kids, I thought this would be perfect.  And what I love about it is that you can move the pieces into different configuerations!

  • We got our set from Eldorado. City Furniture also has some good stuff.

  • I've gotten all my stuff from City Furniture and Ashley.

Can I make a few suggestions when you go shopping (I used to work in the business...)

If you are looking for a durable piece (which most of us are because we can't afford to just replace our furniture all the time) really examine what the piece looks like.  Don't just look at the style (yes, that will draw you to it first) but how well do the cushions hold up, how does the couch sit in every seat, etc.  The pieces in the showroom get way more people sitting on them than will happen in your house.

If a salesperson asks you about warranties and such I would only get them if you are getting a sofa with recliners.

Also, most stores have more in the store than on a website, so don't not go to a store just because you don't see something on the web that you like.

  • All of our stuff is from Ashley, City Furniture, and Rooms to Go. We've had most of it for about 4-6 years and it still looks brand new.

thanks, rach!!  i wish we had that advice when we got our first couch (which we just got rid of.)  Peter went and bought a couch at rooms to go and the cushions were attached to the couch, they sagged after 2 months so you couldn't fluff them, the stitching started unravelling... not a great investment!

  • they obviously carry more than sectionals, but my sectional is in perfect condition and it was purchased back in 2005. It's a Kevin Charles from City Furniture.

    :)

  • We got ours at Macy's.  They have a good furniture store on US1 and  136 St.  We got a great price too... on a Natuzzi sectional w/ 2 recliners.  It was on sale, and I think we opened up the credit card for an add'l discount.

ETA - this is the one we have.  Plus, Macy's offers a great 5 yr service plan (add'l cost) that IMO is well worth it, especially w/ kids!  If the kids draw on it w/ perm marker, and it doesn't come off... you get new sofa!

    and we love it.

We had a set for RTG but after the first year the frame broke. we dealt with it for a while and then at the beginning of last year we bought that one. We LOVE it. The color on it is a little darker than what you see in the picture. It's big and we love it. We bought an extra armless chair and corner piece for it. It's huge and we think it's awesome. We fall asleep on it all the time.

  • We have two sets of couches. Ones from Ashley furniture that just is too hard to keep clean and one from Rooms To Go (or City Furniture I can't remember) that is microfiber that we have in the playroom. They are awesome especially when you have kids around. They wipe off super easily and still look great 5 years later!
  • I totally replied to this thread again and for some reason it didn't show up... boo....

I wanted to add really try and look for a microfiber piece.  With kids it's the best way to go - it cleans up super easy.

  • All the furniture in my house came from Rooms to Go, City Furniture, El Dorado, and then a few things from Crate & Barrel.

Shop around.  I think those big stores have reasonable prices but you need to check out the furniture, some of the quality is questionable but most of it is really good.
