Where is it?  Is it under the skin?  It could be a lymph node if it's under the skin, moves a bit, and is behind the ears or around the base of the neck.  If it's a lymph node, it's normal if it's not painful and not super hard.

  • DD has the same thing at the base of her skull.  It's about the size of a pea and moves around a bit.  We noticed it when she was about 4 months old and asked the pedi about it.  He said it was pretty common (both my mom and brother have had them).  He measured it so that he could keep track of the size in case it increased at all.  I would definitely mention it at your appt., but, if it doesn't seem to be bothering your DS, I don't think you need to call.

  • My DD has one on the back of her head right now. It's a lymph node and the doc said as long as it doesn't get bigger or is not a solid lump on the top of her head than don't worry.
  • right...about 2" back from his ear on the same plane.  under the skin.

Yep - that sounds just like DD's.

  • My DS has the same thing!!! I was so paranoid until we had 3 pedis check it out and say that since it wasnt attached to the skull and it seemed like it was under the skin that there is no reason to freak out...me being a first time mom still check it every day because im paranoid...i have one on my head too so maybe its genetic
  • Glad to hear this is normal. My DS has this too. I always touch it when he's BFing and it freaks me out. It is only on one side - is that the case for your LO's as well?

Yes, when my son's was obvious, I could just feel it on one side.  It's not as obvious anymore.
  • My DD has a lump exactly how and where you described, and my pedi said it is a lymph node and fairly common and not to worry about it.
