No milk left...what do I do?

DS already ate but he is still hungry. I pumped and barely got anything. So, should I top him off with formula? I haven't given him formula ever... but he is still wanting to nurse and getting mad when nothing comes out. What would you do, try to console him (more) or give him formula?

Re: No milk left...what do I do?

  • Give him some formula.  It won't hurt him.
  • Loading the player...
  • What you could do is put him to each breast, then give him just 1oz of formula to see if that satisfies him.  That way you are stimulating your milk production and you don't run the risk of LO starting to prefer the bottle because its easier to get milk out of.
  • We do formula here if we don't have enough...
  • Could it be a growth spurt a little late?  It is fine to give him formula.  It isn't poison by any means, but I do know how you feel.

I would keep putting him to the breast as much as possible.

  • Put him to the breast. Your body will produce. Pumping isn't necessarily a great indicator of what is in your boobs. And your body needs to up supply to keep up with him.

THIS! And worst case, you can always supplement with formula. But your body works on a supply and demand basis. If your baby demands it, your body will get used to supplying it.
