If you did not wear a hospital gown....

If you didn't wear a hospital gown during L&D, what did you wear?

A link would be great, or just tell me about what you wore, please! I'm thinking of getting something to wear. TIA!

Re: If you did not wear a hospital gown....

  • I recommend wearing a gown during L&D, it's not a clean process and I wouldn't want to ruin my clothes.  I did wear a tank-tio under my gown, it made me more comfortable.

After I showered the next morning I wore yoga pants and a nursing tank, it was great to get into my own clothes on day 2.

  • I labored in my gown, silly not to as you get so messy. Once I hit transition I took the gown off and delivered in just a bra (all three times - you just get SO hot)

I also showered about 2 hours after delivery all three times. I wore a nightgown the first day/night and then the next day yoga pants and a tank top.

  • My labor was an induction at week 41 because of low fluid.  My body didn't want to go into labor, so the induction took 67 hours.  I wore my own clothes the whole time.  I had on a sports bra, a maternity tank top, and a really long T-shirt (really short dress!) from old navy (not maternity) and a pair of light weight capri yoga pants.  Even after I got an epidural after about 48 hours I kept that stuff on, except the pants (because they had to run catheters into my uterus for an amnioinfusion also).  During the delivery I just lifted the tank top and dress up to around my boobs, and pushed.  I only purchased the dress for the delivery, and it cost all of $6 so I wouldn't have cared if it got ruined or not, but it totally didn't.

I was far more comfortable in my own clothes that I would have been in a hospital gown.  That gown changes your whole mindset about things, and makes you much more of a "patient".  It was very easy to move around the labor wing, walk, sit on the birthing ball, without feeling self-conscious about showing more than I wanted to everyone in a gown.

  • i wore a sports bra, tank top, and a black stretchy skirt made of cotton.

i'm so glad- it made me feel comfy :) I had to be induced so I was in the hospital for 2 days before my baby was born- without epi...with my own clothes I was comfortable laboring in the hallways, etc. Highly recommend. I almost bought a skirt made for labor but I ended up having one just like it already. the one i was going to buy was from binsi.

  • I wore the gown for delivery- and even the 1st night- but after I got to take a shower I changed into some cute nursing PJ's that I got from Motherhood Maternity- I still wear them!
  • Why would you buy an article of clothing just to bleed on it?

  • I wore the gown during L&D (I think the option would have been to be naked which probably would have been easier) Once I knew I wasn't bleeding everywhere postpartum, I wore a normal nightgown that buttoned down the front that I could slip off my shoulders and down really easily for breast feeding and skin to skin contact.
  • I only wore the gown to walk down to the OR, have surgery, and for the 12 hours following. I was there for 8 days so I wore my own camis/tanks, bras, and a knee-length, lightweight cotton Target robe over those. I was on Pit for 2 or 3 days so at night, after they stopped the Pit, I'd put on panties and jammie bottoms. I never had any bleeding issues following my c/s. The little bleeding that I did have... the hospital pad was enough to protect clothing.
  • I went through 4 gowns during labor. They had to break my water and I leaked on my gown constantly. I would have been miserable in a soaking wet outfit.

Yes, some lucky people don't dirty or wet their outfit, but it seems most do. Its not worth it IMO.

  • I wore this up until I got to 8 cm.  I had just gotten out of the tub and they threw the gown on me.  At that point I didn't care what I was wearing!

The little dress is from Target and is stretchy and so so soft.  I still wear it now since I didn't mess it up at all.
