Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

1st appt with Speech Therapist

was this morning.

She brought in a whole bag of toys. DS immediately grabbed the bag and started going through it. He wasn't able to focus on any one task because there were new toys all over the place.

She talked to me the majority of the time about the other kids she is working with and what she used to do before this. She probably worked with DS for five minutes.

I didn't get a good vibe.

I'm going to see how things go for the next few weeks.

Theres really no point to this post. lol. I just wanted to share.

Re: 1st appt with Speech Therapist

  • That is pretty similar to our first experience a couple weeks ago. She got down on the floor with DS and talked to me the majority of the time. She interacted with DS for maybe 5 minutes. I'm remaining optimistic though, its only the beginning.

  • Good to know. We start in a few weeks so I'll have to see how our first appointment goes. Thanks for sharing!

  • There is a lot of value in rapport building.  If she had come in and started drilling your son, he would have pulled away and never wanted to see her again.  But now, she has made it so that he will be happy to see her again and interested in interacting with her.  She will need that to be able to make progress with him.  I am not sure about the "talking about her other clients and what she used to do" part though =/  That doesn't sound so great...
  • I'm a Speech Pathologist. She was probably trying to establish a rapport with you and your child during that first sessions, so the first couple of sessions may be more informal like that. Give it a little time and if you still don't feel like it is beneficial then try another SLP/service. At a young age, most sessions are going to be play-based...especially if it's ECI. Good luck!
