Have you heard of Spokeo.com

Have you heard of this new spokeo.com site?  It compiles info on people from the internet and allows people to search from its website to get personal data.  I tried it, it is about 85% accurate for me, but very wrong for some other people I tried.  You can remove yourself from their site by following their 'privacy' link.  I think they have a little too much info on me so I am trying to remove myself.

This is from the site:

Spokeo aggregates publicly available information from phone books, social networks, marketing surveys, real estate listings, business websites, and other public sources. Spokeo does not originate data or publish user-generated content like Facebook or MySpace. Rather, Spokeo indexes third-party data in ways similar to Google or Bing. Spokeo does not control or maintain any aggregated third-party data, and therefore cannot guarantee its accuracy or currentness. Spokeo does not publish any information for children under 18.

  • Yeah, I saw this a few weeks ago... it couldn't find me at all, and it has DH but basically just our address.. so I'm not too worried.

  • It had EVERYTHING on me!  Had DH's name as my spouse, that we have kids, when we bought our house, our income, that we own a motorcycle, even that we have cats!  It also claims to have my mortgage amounts and other financial info.  I know it compiles from the internet and that info is otherwise accessable, but wow does it make identity theft easier!
  • I have heard of it.  It had a bunch of my info, but it said my house was over $1m, which I think it says (incorrectly) for a lot of people.

I went and erased my MySpace and Friendster accounts, made sure my FB account was set to private, and I think I may have erased my Spokeo info.

It's still kind of wierd tho that you can go on maps.google.com and look at someone's house (for most people, at least in more populated areas).

  • Yes!!  I found out about it today and looked myself up.  I guess the only good thing is that the info is a little outdated but it still had EVERYTHING on there.  So I removed myself and my husband from the database.  So scary.
  • Just checked it out- it had lots on my maiden name but couldnt find me married...

but I found it had a lot of the same info for multiple people...and it said my parents house was worth 1M+...that is fricken hilarious..
