High-Risk Pregnancy

NST question!

Repost from 3rd tri- no one there seems to even be having NST's done?!

When did you begin having twice weekly NSTs? My Ob had said previously he would start them at 34 weeks, and today when I went in for a check-up, he had me do my first one and schedule my second for Friday. Any thoughts on why he might want to begin these earlier than previously stated? He hasn't given me any inclination that there is a problem even though I am high-risk (type1 diabetes).

  • NSTs are only done in high-risk pregnancies. That is why few people on the 3rd tri board are getting them.  THere are a lot of high risk reasons to get them...GD, PIH, IUGR, chronic hypertension, pre-existing diabetes (like you).  Why they are starting off with twice weekly at 30 weeks for you...I don't know.  But don't worry, it is a good way to monitor your baby and is painless and has no risk (except possible further testing if it is nonreassuring).  The biggest downside is the number of doctor visits. I have had twice weekly testing (one NST and one BPP) since 32 weeks when my blood pressure went up.
  • No need to worry.  I am on glyburide (Gestational Diabetes) and my doctor started twice weekly NST's on me at 30 weeks.  It doesn't take too long because baby still can move around quite a bit, at least this is my case.  I have my 4th one tomorrow, and they keep getting shorter each time.  I have mine at the hosptial, so I am meeting all the Labor and Delivery nurses ahead of time, which I think will be great and to my advantage when it comes to delivery.

  • My doc starts them 2x a week at 32 weeks.  I was not high risk for my first pregnancy and didn't have one so it will be a new experiance.
  • I started mine @ 32 weeks, 2x a week
