Tummy time tears

Let me preface this by saying that I definitely do not let DD CIO right now!

90% of the time DD HATES tummy time.  She can last only seconds to minutes before she's crying.  I try to soothe her to keep her on her tummy longer, but typically that doesn't work so I end up flipping her over or picking her up to calm her down.

My question is: how long do you typically let your LO cry if s/he hates tummy time?

Re: Tummy time tears

  • I have no great words of wisdom for you but do have a shoulder to lend your way. My DD loathes tummy time. She can't stand it. She is thrilled to be in the exersaucer though. I saw her daycare teacher put her in it and though her feet can't touch the bottom (she'll be 4 months next week) DD was thrilled to be "standing" up and looking around. She doesn't mind being on her back in her floor gym as long as the TV is on but for tummy time? Forget it. Screams the whole time. I will leave her on the floor for 5-10 minutes and that usually because I have to switch loads of laundry or empty the dishwasher real quick before I pick her up again.

  • DS sleeps on his tummy so he gets about 15 hours a day of "tummy time". LOL

I think due to the fact that he sleeps on his tummy he doesn't mind being on his tummy while awake at all.

DS likes when I lay on my tummy and put my face right up against his. Have you tried that?

  • Mine starts fussing and she'll lift her head but won't do much and then starts crying. I pick her up and soothe her. I really want her to spend time on her tummy but we've been doing this dance for weeks and I've seen no progress so I just pick her up. Maybe she needs more time to adjust so I'm not giving up yet. I am hopeful that she'll eventually learn to enjoy it. But to answer your question, I let her fuss for a couple of minutes. Once she starts crying, and I know she won't stop, I pick her up.
  • DD will now tolerate tummy time for about 10 minutes. This has been a gradual increase from about 2 minutes when we first started. She's really into mirrors so I'll take the mirror off of her play gym when we do tummy time and hold it up in front of her so that it gives her incentive to push herself up and it also gives her something to focus on.
