Preemies

Your preemie's first birthday

Could your preemie enjoy the whole "smash cake" experience on their first birthday or were they not handling that much of solids yet? I was just thinking ahead and wondering if mine might be able to. So far, they aren't good eaters! TIA

Re: Your preemie's first birthday

  • i was concerned that he wouldn't be on table foods by 1 year, but he totally got it!
  • My DD wasn't really into the whole cake thing, she did scratch it. She has to "scratch" everything. But she really only started feeding herself a few days before. She did smear icing all over her face. There are pics in my blog. She did try to feed my and DH.

  • Lily loved it.  But she's been eating table foods for a long time.

  • Evan wasn't eating by mouth at all at the time, he was completely tube fed. We didn't care, we made him a hypoallergenic cake, (he has allergies) just for him. and let him dig and smash in it. He really got into that part, and I think he even took a couple of licks. I think at the time, I had felt cheated out of so much, I wasn't going to be cheated out of the smash cake experience too. It went really well, and we got some great pictures. I have a few friends who made their kids the cakes, but the kids didn't really do anything with it. I don't think it hurts to offer with close supervision and just remove if it goes poorly.
  • Thanks!!

And that gives me a good idea, if they aren't into solids yet (mostly I am concerned with DD) I could just give them a plop of icing, LOL! It's mostly about the cute pics with icing on the face anyway, right?  ;)

    Thanks again

I think regardless of how much they eat, most babies love the way smashing a cake feels :)

  • My LOVED their cake, but they were good eaters.  We started solids at 6 months and were on 3 meals a day by 7.5 months.  They were on almost all table foods around 11 months.  I think that as long as you've introduced things that have similar textures like bread and mushy things like frosting they may do ok.  Nathan actually preferred the doughnut wheels, but they both enjoyed the experience and did eat some.  I thought they might throw up by the time they were done, but both were good!
