Where to file a complaint w/ the state about daycare?

I have no idea where to look or who to call. I want the state to know about what happened to Bennett today so they can look into it and do some sort of inspection. I want to make sure this never happens to another child!

  • I'm glad he's ok- it sounded like they were really sorry and that it was an accident. You even said they were putting up a new gate. I know that things like this can happen- I found Charlie in my backyard today without me knowing it. I don't know if I would report them though.

  • I think I would wait and see what their response is and if they follow through with what they have told you they would do.  Did they tell you they would be investigating what happened???  If they did, I would expect them to report back to you how it happened, what went wrong with their procedures, and how they plan to correct any problems.  I am so glad your DS is okay...very scary situation.
  • I don't really want to get anyone in trouble, so I was hoping to just get someone in to do an inspection to where they can make sure everything is safe. Is that possible or will reporting them automatically get them into trouble?

  • I believe if they are reported and if they are investigated that would show up to anyone looking for the information (I could be wrong).  That is why I suggested seeing what they come up with as far as determining the problem and fixing any problems first.  If they don't follow through then I would report them.  Give them a chance to respond to the situation.

I say this, but I know my DH would be on the phone in a second and I might feel and react differently if it were my child.  Good luck with whatever you decide to do.

  • If they do not make IMMEDIATE changes to their procedures and the physical property I would report them.

I think it may fit under the community health umbrella.

  • I saw your post earlier and was hoping you would report it. Ive worked in childcare for over six years and there is no excuse good enough for what happened. I would report it to the police and CPS. When you work with children, mistakes like that are not allowed. A few years ago (not my center), a child was left out on the playground and got through a gate into the parking lot. They found him hanging from the window of a car. He tried to climb into someones car that had their window half way down and slipped. Luckily they found him in time.

I agree- I would see how they follow through with everything they said they were going to fix.

  • I know at my center, they would have to report what happened themselves to corporate and CPS. I wouldn't wait to call, its just going to look like you were never that worried about it. State will investigate what happened and make sure its fixed. It will probably go on the public record but so will the fixes. If they are talking about putting a gate up in the doorway, they cannot do that because its a fire hazard.

  • I work at a childcare center and yes things happen but I don't blame you for wanting to file a complaint...I would.

You want to file a complaint through DYFS division of youth and family services.  They will go in and do an inspection make sure everything is up to par maybe take a statement from the administration and it will be kept on file in case there are other complaints filed later. No one will get in trouble unless there is an obvious problem.

    Good luck!

  • As another resident in your state, I hope you do report this! We chose our daycares to look at based on state reports. Almost every single daycare did have reports of some sort, but we based our decisions off of what they did to fix the problem and what the initial problem was. I would definitely want to know on a public file that this happened and they fixed it.

I agree with Mrs. Ryan on where to report. I am so glad that Bennett is okay!

  • In SC, day care centers are regulated through DSS (Department of Social Services).  You should definitely report to them and they will send out a case worker to investigate.  Good luck.
