2nd Trimester

Hemorrhoids anyone?

So...yep- lucky me.  I have them.  The ironic part is that my dad was this type of doctor (colon-rectal surgeon) and finally when I need some medical advice, he's not here anymore (he passed away several years ago).

From years of hearing him talk to people on the phone, I know he thought cortisone was better than preparation H, but none of his patients (to my knowledge) were pregnant so I'm not sure if you can use it when you're pregnant.

I'll call my doctor tomorrow but I don't want to call the emergency line tonight since it's not really an emergency.  So, what were you told to use?  I know Sitz baths and the donut ring but I'm just wondering about creams/suppositories.

No answer is too graphic- I'm used to hearing about them at the dinner table growing up so I'm pretty much immune to it!

Re: Hemorrhoids anyone?

  • Are you sure they're hemorrhoids? I only ask because I thought I had them after a trip to the potty and a LOT of blood, so I called my doc and she said it didnt sound like I had them. She said as long as its not painful, I shouldnt worry. She also mentioned that the prep H wipes are easy and safe to use just in case I get nervous and want to be sure. She also mentioned that if its only happening sometimes with out pain, to try minor laxatives, because sometimes our constipation can scratch us from the inside and cause bleeding and it heals up on its own. (that's what I had I guess) Hopefully you dont have them, cos from what I hear they are a PITA (no pun intended. haha) GL!

  • I've never had hemorrhoids myself, but a close friend had the same issue during her pregnancy.  Not sure of which meds are safe but know that you can use witch hazel pads and ice.  And of course, lots of water and fiber:)

Oh yes, I'm sure- no doubt about it.  It's very painful to sit.  No blood- just intense swelling and pain.  I'm not constipated either- that's the weird part, but I know it happens without constipation either.

  • Mine only flares up when I'm pregnant.  And it just did this past weekend and I am getting over it right now.  I couldn't sit, stand, walk....I was in tears.  I used preparation H cooling gel and the wipes and put the wipes in the fridge to keep them cool.  Its much better now and will be back to normal soon, but its the worst.

I never thought to put the wipes in the fridge- what a great idea!  That would feel good.  I'm going to do that now.  Thanks!  I hope you're feeling better soon.  For something so small, they sure are painful!

  • I've had hemorrhoids even pre-BFP. I was told not to use cortisone during pregnancy since it's a steroid.

My rectal doc has me using Prep-H wipes. I also use Balneol (over the counter) which really helps soothe things down. I definitely recommend Balneol if yours itch. Of course clear it with your doc though. My OB was totally fine with Prep-H & Balneol on a daily basis usage.

I hope you feel better. They do stink!! I'm planning on getting mine fixed after pregnancy.

That's what I was afraid of!  Oh well.  I will check out Balneol tomorrow.  Thanks!

No problem! It's a pain to find though. I had to ask someone at CVS. It's in a small white bottle, similar to Bactine. I made sure to memorize what aisle it was in for the next purchase.

  • I was told I have internal ones- not really an expert.  I couldn't figure out why there was blood when I wiped.  I was really freaked out.  My Dr was great and explained that someone people have internal and others have external.  I happened to have my burst I think was the word.  I actually even got referred to a gastro specialist to make sure they didn't need to clot the hemorrhoid before our baby is born.  All news to me- never experienced anything like this.  But some things I have tried besides the wipes- which are great cold- are benefiber pills. time in the tub didn't really help me.  The gastro dr recommended after speaking to ob.  He said it will help and it seems to have helped for the time being.  Good Luck to you.
  • I have only had experience with the external type and wow it's a painful thing.  It was something I had after the births though- not during pregnancy.  Prep H does nothing for me and only the cortizone cream or suppositories gave me any relief-  the healing/relief was quite fast as soon as I got the right treatment.
