Claire or Clare?

Re: Claire or Clare?

  • I've actually known both but I think "Claire" is more common. It's pretty!

  • I like either spelling, but if you're going for the most common, I would go with Claire.

We had Claire/Clare picked out for a middle name for a girl after my grandmother, Clarice. We were considering going with the Clare spelling since that was closer to her name.

  • I think Claire is more common but we're considering using the other spelling as a middle name.  We also have the long, crazy last name dilemma.

  • I like both spellings, but Claire is going to be the spelling most people automatically jump to.

  • Claire is definitely more common.

    Clare is very nice too.

  • Claire.

I know of two MEN, in their 60s and 70s, who are named Clare. I therefore always thought C-L-A-R-E was a man's name, while Claire is the feminine version.

  • Definitely Claire.

  • Claire. Don't handicap her by misspelling it from the start.

Clare is not a misspelling.  It is the traditional way to spell it in the UK and Ireland.  Claire is the French spelling (and what is more commonly used in the US).

  • My name is Claire, and that is how most people spell it when I tell them.  I rarely have to spell it out, even over the phone.  My friend Patrick, his middle name is Clare.  I think that seems like the masculine choice because it is short for Clarence.  Good luck...great name choice by the way!
