Cosco scenera ok for a backup/emergency seat?

I am thinking to keep at grandmas for random needs (ie, we bought an infant seat from a friend and she used it once in 6 mo)

Also needing one for the sitters, one day a week, when she picks up her daughter from school. It is 4 blocks away and she only drives when the weather is too bad to walk

Can I extended rear face in this seat? Where's the cheapest place to buy this?

Re: Cosco scenera ok for a backup/emergency seat?

  • Kids can generally get to at least 2.5 RF in the seat. It's a fine seat (they all pass the same safety tests), but it is difficult to install, so not my recommendation for a seat that will be taken out a lot. I would definitely not rely on anyone else to install it. If you use a pool noodle underneath (sometimes 3 taped in a triangle together), it's much easier to install.
  • absolutely

you can get the pink one from overstock.com for $40 with free shipping as a new customer if you don't mind a little pink :)

  • Oh, and check kmart or walmart for the cheapest prices.
  • Great seat.  We have two in DH's car and will get a third for DS when he needs it.  Not the most comfortable, but rated really well by CR especially in terms of safety.  Nothing I'd take a long trip in, but definitely perfect for a second car/grandma seat.  We got ours at Walmart for about $40-$45 each.  My mom even bought two for her car in FL so we don't have to bring car seats with us.  Worth the price for us to not have to haul the car seats with us.

Just can't remember how high the RF weight limit is.  I want to say around 35lbs, but I can't remember.

ETA - We usually install ours with the seatbelt because we do take them in and out often.  FF - it's really easy and secure.  I agree with ghm about the RF, though.  You need a couple towels rolled up or something to get it in just right.

  • Yes, we have 2 for this purpose.

One stays installed in my dad's truck. Although DD is still RFing in our cars, we do let her FF in his truck because to me knowing that I installed it/checked it is more important than worrying that he did a lousy install and her sitting RFing.

The other we put in friend's cars as needed. For some reason I can not get it to RF with latch in my friend's Ford Freestyle, but it does install well with a seatbelt.

So I agree that it's not the easiest thing to install.

DD is 32lb and 38" and still RFing in the Scenera and she's almost 3. It's a bit cramped compared to her other seats, but she has never complained.
