Why was I dx with GD?

Ok so, I was diagnosed with GD last Tuesday and I had my appointment for the counseling and all yesterday. I started testing last night, and just for the pure fact of trying to see what my body can and cannot have I ate everything as I normally would just to see where I stand. Well after having spaghetti for dinner I came out with a 82. This morning for fasting was an 85, then after lunch ( salad with chicken, bacon, and eggs, and ranch) I had a 90. I am really confused. Could the GD test results be wrong? Was I not THAT bad? When I did the GD test I came out with a 220, 223, and a 176. I guess I am just lost as to why I am still doing the same things but coming out with normal numbers?

Re: Why was I dx with GD?

  • My first thought would be, you are eating things which work for your body and your case of GD.  The test results are from drinking the glucose drink and measuring your bodies reaction to that, not to what you normally eat...so you probably have GD, but don't have to change your diet much because you are already eating the right things.

  • Ok , thanks....I was just worried that it couldnt be something as simple as that!!! Being that I just started yesterday I assumed something was wrong with my monitor or maybe the testing was wrong..thanks for the info!!
  • Just wanted to add that I usually had amazing numbers when I tested...it made me think the glucose test was wrong.  Towards the end of preg. I started getting a little more *daring* with my meals, and the numbers showed it!  What you're eating probably just works for you. Smile
  • You'll probably find some things work for you and others don't.  For example I can eat as much pasta as I want with great numbers.  But I so much as look at a banana and my numbers shoot up.
  • Yeah, you failed your 3 hr test miserably.  I can eat some things on that are on my no-no list with great numbers and there are things I should be able to eat that totally blow it.  It just depends on your body.  And that salad you made for lunch is actually pretty carb friendly.

  • I thought the same thing at first too.  I didn't get a single high number for almost two weeks.  I could eat a small dessert w/ lunch and dinner with no problems.  So one morning, I tried eating frosted flakes for breakfast and my blood sugar was 138.  You just have to experiment with what you can get by with.  I can get by with eating all kinds of stuff that is not on the diet, for now.  Just consider yourself lucky that you can be more liberal with your diet.
  • I have been questioning my numbers as well.  I was told I had it after getting a 190 on the one hour.  They have refused to give me the three hour.  My fastings have been in the 63-85 range and most of the others are low 100's with a max of 120 a few times.  I even had a 75 after lunch one day.  My dietition upped my carb amounts but I am going to talk to my Dr. at my appointment tomorrow.

  • I know what you mean. I am pretty much eating like I normally would and my numbers have been fine. I was craving chocolate, so I ate a snack size Snickers and boy did they shoot up. I have pretty much cut out Coke, fruit juice and candy and my numbers have been where they should be. As a newbie with GD, I didn't quite understand it, but then when I ate that small candy bar, I could see how my numbers were affected. I guess it will just take some time to learn what you can and can not eat. Take care! Also, I sent you a private email after my doctors appointment with a link to a video.... if your interested.
