We want to start having #2 today, but unfortunately for insurance, we are going to have to wait two to three months. So, here is the deal. I am 39 and I take the mini-pill. I started taking the mini-pill six months after my son was born when I was 38. Prior to my son I had absolutely regular periods of 28 days with a few 27 thrown in there every once in a while. I have been this regular for 20 years. Well, after my son, my cycles are all over the place - 28 days, 25 days, 23 days - last month was 27 days and I started spotting today which would make my last cycle 12 days which is crazy!! I don't think I am pregnant - so has anyone experienced this? I am afraid of perimenopause because we want one more baby.
Any help or advice would be appreciated.
Re: Need help regarding cycles
I was really regular before BCP (which was actually in high school, so that doesn't mean much) and of course regular on BCP, because you can't be irregular on BCP. Went off of BCP after 15 years of use and it took a full year for me to get close to regular. I was having 7 week cycles for about 6 months and still have cycles that very from 21 days to 35 days. I believe I am ovulating as indicated by OPK and FSH is normal, so I think that my irregularity is due to age (35) and years of BCP use. I have heard that peri-menopause can start as early as 10 years before menopause, so I suppose that could be affecting all of us, but I have also heard that women tend to follow their mother's and grandmother's as far as when they go through menopause and pretty much all the women in my family on both sides didn't go through menopause until their late 50's.
I am kind of blabbering, I know. I think there are other symptoms to peri-menopause than irregular periods, but if you think you may be going through it, I would go to your OB and get some tests done. Even if you are in peri-menopause, you can still get pregnant so don't get too anxious yet. I think that your body is still adjusting to a fairly recent pregnancy and BCP usage. Good luck, hopefully you'll get your BFP soon!
