WAAAY TMI ?

Soo, zofran causes major constipation...and I have to take at least 1 pill a day to stop from getting sick 5-6 times during the day.

I need something to help me go. (Right now it's only like 1 time every 5 days...and I never feel..."done" when I go)  Any suggestions?  I don't really want to take colace.  And I have a hard time eating foods sometimes.

  • decaf coffee always makes me go.

  • Metamucil.

I also took Zofran and now take iron and both helped. I do have a stool softener built into my prenatal as well, so I just took 1-2 metamucil pills 2 times a day.

  • Go to the health food store (or Whole Foods) and find Psyllium Husk.  They make it in capsul form and in powder that you can add to drinks, smooties, etc.  It's the active ingredient in Metamucil, but in its completely natural form.  Safe during pregnancy, and works wonders for me!  If you use it daily, you will be so regular you won't even believe it!  GL!
  • Can you stomach dried fruit? I went on a thoughtless dried apricot eating binge a few days ago and the results were...definite. The apricots, however, were delicious.

  • Smooth Move Tea by Traditional Medicinals.  I can get it at my grocery store.

  • i've been using colace (generic) but can tell you that my non-pregnant husband (so not pg digetstive-system tested mind you!  lol) was making himself a morning smoothie that was a variety of fruit (strawberries, banana, blueberries) OJ and yogurt and he had one like...4 days in a row round about...and then...well he was definitely the opposite of constipated and i had to remind him that perhaps he ought to tone it down with the fruit.  but maybe that's what your belly needs to even out???

other than that make sure you're keeping your fluids up

  • Milk of magnesia. I had the same problem with DD and it helped. Also I did eat prunes. I use to only be able to eat oatmeal ( which too much will plug you up too) so I would mix baby prune puree in it. That also worked. Hope you feel better soon. Oh never tried this but my gma told me to try kyro syrup. The darker one.
  • I'm a big fan of miralax.  My OB said it was fine during pg.

  • Someone told me to drink prune juice it never got that bad for me to try it.  Drink lots of water, and ginger tea helped me but I think I remember you saying that ginger made you sick.

I highly recommend this as well. I had issues immediately after DD was born (I think from the c/s) and this worked wonders!

  • i'm on Zofran too and it is really doing a number on my usually very regular system (previously i went 2x a day). I haven't found any magic answer, but here's what i'm doing and things are moving a LITTLE better this week, but still not easy. I even tried eating pizza twice last week (usually cleans me out in a big way) but it just seemed to cause cramping and bloat :(

1/2 c prune juice each am, at least 1-2 servings of dried fruit (apricots, raisins or craisins), fruit/yogurt smoothie most days, plenty of fiber in my diet, drinking as much water as i can bear, and trying to walk around a little bit more than i was. Last week i was drinking plumsmart juice (next to prune juice in the grocery store, but not as unpleasant) it didn't seem to work as well as the prune juice FYI.

wish i'd seen this before i just made my weekly run to the health food store...i will have to make another trip to get some of the psyllium husk caplets. I have also heard that flax seed works wonders, but i find it hard to tolerate, even in smoothies.

Try flax seed meal instead of the seeds.

  • During pregnancy and m/s I had success with hot water with lemon, first thing in the morning.

  • Colace and glycerin suppositories.

  • if you aren't used to them flax seeds or even ground flax mixed in something you can eat should get your system moving! once you're used to eating them regularly they don't work as well in that department but at first they move things along pretty freaking quickly!
