would you paint a wrought iron railing?

Hi,

Question - my house was built in the early 70's and you can tell in certain areas.  It is a split entry and on the stairs going up we have black wrought iron railing.  I hate it personally.  I mentioned to my DH over the weekend that maybe we should paint it.  Anyone every do this?  Was it easy?  Does the paint chip and if not, what kind did you use?  My walls are different shades of tan so I was thinking that is how I would paint it.  Or is it just way easier to get wood railings put in (although no clue if that would fit my budget which is very small to none!!).

Thanks

Re: would you paint a wrought iron railing?

  • In our last house, we repainted one. We removed it, brought it outside, and sprayed painted it (two coats white). It worked well and only started to show wear after about 2 years.
  • My Mom painted the railing that we had in the house I grew up in. I don't remember how she did it but it looked fine... and if it does chip, i'm sure you could just touch it up with some paint.

  • If any of it is chipping, sand the bad areas a little first, take them out & spray paint them.  I would not do tan, I really think a tan iron railing would wind up looking... well, like baby poop.  (I've seen lots of shades of tan on chandeliers, and most of them look kinda weird unless it's a base color with another darker color rubbed/speckled over it)

I'd stick with black or crisp white.

  • spray paint will work the best

you're going to have to sand it or pressure wash it to get all the stuff off

  • I was looking through a home renovations blog and saw some re-do a light fixture with a bronzish spray paint. It was this special spray paing that also gave it a hammered looked. Really neat. I hate blck or even white wrought iron so I vote something like I suggested
