LO super hyper after cherry flavored Tylenol...coincidence?

We have always given LO the clear Tylenol infant drops for teething, but we ran out a few days ago so I bought the Up&Up brand from Target.  They only had cherry flavored, so I figured it was fine.

I gave it to her about three hours ago, and she is now WIRED.  She is always ready for bed by 7:00, and almost never has issues going right to sleep.  Well, 8:00 rolled around and she was running in circles around the family room, taking long sips from her sippy cup of water.  It was like she was on something.  DH and I just sat there and watched her for a good 20 minutes, then I finally took her upstairs.  She refused to let me hold her, so I put her in her crib, and she fussed for about 10 minutes (which she NEVER does at bedtime).  I think she's now asleep.

So, was this just a coincidence, or was it the cherry flavor (or the red dye)?

  • A lot of kids are sensitive to red dye, so I wouldn't doubt that it could be the cause.

Look and see if it has Red 40 in it.  My DS has INSANE reactions to this dye.  Like weird behavior and restlessness.

A lot of people have bad reactions to it...although I actually don't think that one is in tylenol, but I'm not sure..

I just checked the box, and it does indeed have red 40 in it.  No more Target brand cherry flavored acetaminophen for DD.  We'll only be doing clear Tylenol from now on.  :-)

Red 40 is the devil.   There is a ton of stuff out there about it's effect on some kids.   I would also keep your CUTIE (seriously adorable) kiddlet away from kool aid type fruit punches.   That makes my son nutso.  Doesn't affect DD, but whooo baby ds goes looney!

Thanks (for the info, and the compliment on my little one)!  :-)

  • My brother had a red dye allergy when he was little and there were a ton of things that he couldn't have because of it.  He would go crazy; my mom always said it was like he was on something.  Eventually he outgrew it, but it was pretty wild.
