My sister works at a preschool and has told me numerous times not to buy a jumper or a walker because it is bad for their hips. Is this true? My cousin practically lived in one when he was a baby and he turned out just fine. In fact he plays division 1 football. Help!
Re: Jumpers and Walkers Bad?
DD's been in her jumperoo/jolly jumper a fair amount since she was 3 months old, or so... the doctor never mentioned anything at her 4 month about it, and he checks her hips every time. I've heard anything with a "crotch dangle" option isn't good for a baby's development (so that's a lot of baby carriers, as well as jumperoo, jumper, exersaucer, walkers, etc), but I also carry DD around a LOT in her baby carrier since she was newborn, and the Snugli I had before I got the body glove was a crotch-dangle one, and again, the doctor said her hips are good. The problem I DID notice with the snugli is that it was cutting off circulation to her legs, which is why I got the body glove (which is a splay-leg carrier), so that could be a potential hazard.
Walkers in and of themselves have actually been banned in Canada, due to the fact that some parents neglect to supervise their infants while they're being used, and there have been too many accidents that are stair-related.
They are bad for leg/muscle development for walking.
But not if you keep them in there 10 minutes at a time. The therapists I work with would always say to throw them away.
