I went to the OB/Gyn today for my yearly visit & to discuss that we have been trying for about 6 months without success (me - 38; DH - 48), She is sending me to the RE and prescribed metformin. I have never been diagnosed with PCOS, but she says that it can help with fertility. I'm still not sure how I feel about it![]()
Has anyone you know taken metformin without being diagnosed with PCOS?
Re: Metformin? Really?
Yes, I was proscribed metformin without having PCOS. We tried for 6 months and I went to the RE. The first thing the doctor did after talking with me is proscribe metformin. She based it upon the fact I had really bad cramps each month and I had family members with diabetes. She said that there is male hormone and female hormone necessary to make an egg and sometimes they get out of balance. Metformin can help with that balance. There were some other things that connected to the cramps and diabetes part of it but it was about 4 years ago and I don't remember all the details. I do remember her asking if I had any hair on my chin or lip- if you get random hairs, that can also be the hormones out of balance. I didn't have that but I went looking!
Metformin isn't awful to take but you do have to watch your carb intake. No one told me that and I kept getting sick (diarrhea) every time I ate a large carb meal. Eating small meals and sticking to a healthy diet definitely helped handle the metformin.
I stayed on it until I was about 4 months pregnant last time. This time a different RE didn't put me on it - but we skipped right to IVF this time so we weren't still trying on our own at that point.
Good luck!
IUI- BFN IVF #1 -BFP! Allie is our 2nd IVF baby. Born at 36 1/2 weeks after pre-e again
i was taking it for PCOS with IR and also something called metabolic syndrome. my body also produces too much testosterone and other hormones that were making it difficult for me to conceive.
as a side note. it did not help me ovulate i ended up on clomid that didnt work and then finally with femara, ovidrel and IUI we got our BFP.
i hope that just metformin helps you and you dont have to add any more meds. have you been charting to see if you ovulate? doing opk? checking cervical mucous? read TCOYF?
