Austin Babies

how much crying is normal?

Help me!  Anderson was an incredibly easy baby, very rarely fussed or cried, if he did it was for a reason and never more than 10 minutes.  Vivian ... lately, not so much.  She's hard to get to sleep (fights it like crazy but sleeps well once she IS asleep), she has 2-3 periods during the day where she just seems cranky for no good reason, really won't stand to be set down for more than 10 minutes, etc.  I just spent the past nearly 2 hours trying to calm her.  She fell asleep at noon, and woke SCREAMING ten minutes later.  No warning, just from sleeping to loud screams (that's been happening a lot lately, I thought maybe gas but burps don't seem to help).  She just cried and cried no matter what I did (diaper, bottle, paci, Moby, swaddle, swing, bouncy, holding her on her tummy, etc.)  So I just cried and cried right along with her - I was trying to work as well, and I only get these 2 hours before A's awake again and has me running...I'm just wiped out and stressed and wondering if there's something wrong with her, or if this is just what it's like to have a "normal" 1.5 month old?  She was fine and happy all morning long up until she woke at 12:10 - then nothing would calm her.

So ... is that normal baby stuff, or does it sound like something is up?  We already changed her to the Gentlease formula (she was spitting up a lot with the regular).  It breaks my heart to hear her cry like that.

Thanks for "listening".  Kind of at the end of my rope here.  :(

Does it usually happen shortly after eating?  Does she projectile spit-up a lot?  Maybe reflux?

It happens at random times, not just after eating.  She was projectile barfing until we switched to Gentlease, now, not much spit up at all.

Anderson did have reflux, so I guess it's worth looking into even if the symptoms aren't the same (he did the arched back, puking all the time no matter the formula thing).

  • sometimes ruby just had to fart and then she was fine, burping didnt help. gripe water and milicon were big helps.

could it be an ear infection? is she pooping, making wet diapers? eating the normal amount of formula?

  • Poor Boos!  You and her!  :(  I hate it when my girls are sad.  I obviously have no advice.  When my pups are upset we go outside and throw the frisbee.  Do you have one?

I hope it gets better, and SOON.

I need to get my hands on some Gripe Water.  Thanks for the reminder.  She never did fart during all this, so maybe that was the problem??

Do kids this little get ear infections?  Dear God, that would be JUST what we need after A's issues.  :(  She is pooping and peeing and drinking just fine.

Yeah, but Vivi's a total frisbee hog and it pisses A right off.

    Thanks anyway, Dot.

Thanks.  I hate to ever complain, but yikes, this was NOT fun.  She has her 2 month check up next week, I'll ask about reflux then.

  • do you give her a paci? we finally did at six weeks and it made a big difference. i also started putting her down within two hours of waking up and her naps got a little bit better.

i HATE to say this but im sure youre already thinking it... but some babies just arent great sleepers. ruby has never slept well, always wakes up screaming like it's the end of the world (even at sixteen months) and was very difficult to get to sleep for forever. i know you probably dont want to hear that, but it's my honest answer. for your sake, im hoping there is something going on that you can "fix" and have V sleep like a champ and feel better.

  • Have you tried the gas drops? Mylicon. I used them with Austin and they helped a TON.

  • Ugh!  Poor baby and mama!!  DD was not a happy camper when she had to toot and couldn't.  We would massage her stomach and make her do bicycles.  It seemed to help.  Hopefully something works!  Hang in there!  ((hugs))

  • Have you tried a blowdryer?  I know it sounds crazy... but it totally worked for Ryan.  I would put him in the swing (sometimes swaddles, sometimes not) and turn on the blowdryer and he would just calm down almost instantly (sometimes I would need to rub his head a little bit).  But he was a little colic-y at V's age.
  • I don't have anything to add, S was a dream baby like A.  :(  Hope it gets better and ditto the Mylicon.
