Any advice on reseeding a lawn?

Our lawn is pretty patchy, and sod is pretty pricey.  Has anyone reseeded lately?  How do you keep the birds, etc. away?

Re: Any advice on reseeding a lawn?

  • I'd recommend "top dressing" with compost first (an inch or two...so the little seed have lots of good soil/nutrients to root into...and then overseeding. We've never worried to much about the birds. Be sure to water regularly (according to the bag) at first, until the little guys have a chance to sprout and root...otherwise, it's easy to kill them before they get established.

  • I spread straw over wherever we just seeded, because we have terrible birds.

  • When we did it to some patchy areas, we  added some good soil there first, and then used a seed product that had mulch/fertilizer with it.  Not EF, most likely - but in my defense, I think it was before my EF days....
