Breastmilk vs. Formula Question

Why is ok for a baby to get as much breastmilk as they want, but a limit on how much formula they should consume?

Re: Breastmilk vs. Formula Question

  • Guessing, but maybe because BM changes with your baby's needs. Formula is always the same composition wise.

  • What pp said, and because it's easier for breastfed babies to regulate the amount of breastmilk they get, compared to bottlefed babies. Also, breastfed babies tend to get their fill of sucking at each feeding since it takes so long, while bottle fed babies often don't get enough sucking time to satisfy them... so if you give them as more formula as they continue to suck, they're eating more than they need to even though they just want to suck . . . wow that was a little convoluted. Hope it answers your question!

  • Same reason a person can eat as much lettuce as they want, but should really not eat many cheetos.

  • DD BF'd more frequently because she got less food at each feed so she was hungrier more often. It's more like eating small meals frequently vs a smaller number of larger meals.

Plus, my LC always told us BM digests way faster than formula so DD needed to eat more often when she BF'd.

When I switched from BM to formula, I *know* she gets 5 - 6 oz every 3 - 4 hours. When I BF'd, she'd cluster feed all night because she didn't get as much food for the amount of effort she put forth.

Ummm... I don't think comparing breastmilk and formula is like comparing lettuce to cheetos. I am certainly not feeding my child something that is unhealthy for her. Plus, a lot of times a mother's breastmilk has a lot more calories per ounce than formula.

Its not so much about calories than it is about healthy content. Formula IS  processed food. Its a valid comparison. A child could live on cheetos and peanut butter and jelly, same as a baby can live on formula. But theres a healthier option.

  • To expand a bit on what PPs have said.  Formula has iron content and other minerals (Vitamin D) that your LO does not get as much of in BM, at least typically.  That is why pedis recommend supplements for EBF LOs.  When you exceed a certain amount (most say 32 oz.), you risk ODing LO on those minerals.  HTH.

Oh - and formula is not junk food.  Offensive indeed.

Uhmm yes it is. For some of us, there wasn't another "option." So to insinuate that we are feeding our babies the equivalent of junk food because we couldn't breastfeed (or didn't want to, or whatever the case was) is stupid.

Recommending supplements is mostly an americanized measure that isnt really necessary. Iron is not needed for breastfed babies at all, and vitamin d is now recommended because of mothers who do not know about making sure thier child gets sunlight. Formula isnt that great and was invented only for medically necessary situations. People just use it now for convenicne which is kind of gross. I wouldnt want baby's life started on something out of a can.

Yes, you are right breastfeeding is best and I tried my best to breastfeed my child, but unfortunately my child kept losing weight because my body was not producing enough milk. I did absolutely everything that I could to help my body produce more milk, but nothing worked. So, she is now formula fed. However, when she is older I do not plan on feeding her cheetos, peanut butter and jelly, nor do I think formula compares to these items.

if its because one truly couldnt breastfeed (which is very rarely the case) then thats what formula was invented for, otherwise, its selfish and yucky to be giving it to a baby. Its essentially robbing them of what belonged to them and replacing it with a crappy imitation.

So My question to you while you are on your high horse is this.... What should people who cant breast feed do? I mean seriously. Would you like to offer your perfect milk producing breasts to my child? She has been fed from a can since the moment she has been born without hesitation from me or my physicians.  So what my child is getting is Shiit right? By your standards anyway.

I mean seriously poor child that I have damn, she would starve to death without formula because I HAVE NO BREASTS to feed my child with. SO yeah I would take the can gladly if that means after surviving IF and Breast Cancer that I am able to actually have a beautiful healthy child.

    Get off your high horse

And try using grown up words instead of gross and yucky. For god sakes you arent a toddler.

He definately eats other foods.  But we eat a lot of peanut butter in this house.  Both the good stuff, and the not so good stuff.  He is a very healthy kid, a lil skinny, but healthy all the same.

And to the formula=cheetos poster.  I EBF, which makes me extremely happy.  But people who EBF and have crappy diets do nothing for the wellbeing of their LOs.  Just becase people BF does not make them any better than FF.

  • So am I correct in assuming that I've just been called selfish, yucky, and gross because I CHOSE to formula feed my son? I guess my mom is too since she also CHOSE to formula feed me. Its a wonder I'm not fat and gross from starting my life eating "cheetos"!
  • I didn't see anyone list this reason.. there's something in formula (I can't remember what exactly, iron maybe, or some other mineral) that babies can't have too much of or it's hard on their kidneys, so that's why pedi's will say to limit FF to a certain amount of oz per day (32 according to our pedi).

Yes  Not to mention the "lettuce" baby would be pretty nutrient deprived too. So it was not a very well thought out statement Yes Maybe kale would have been a better option for her. LOL. Much more nutrient rich and healthy then lettuce, which is mostly water.

But eh, someone clearly is in need of attention. It's like when my 2yo does something wrong while making sure that I'm watching her.. just to get the reaction and attention Wink

I don't mean to be rude...or maybe I do...but WTF is wrong with you? It's SELFISH and YUCKY to give your child formula? Seriously? How would you feel if YOU were FF and someone said that to you? Whatever reason a mother has for giving her child formula, it is NOT your place to say that what they are doing is wrong. How about you just worry about your own child, and we will worry about ours, hmm?

The fact is that you are Mrs. B - should be obvious from all the posts here.  But, then, I would imagine it's no surprise to you since I'm certain you hear it in real life all the time.  Let me check some boxes for you:

Formula - check; daycare - check; disposable diapers - check; stroking - plenty of it because I am a GOOD MOM.  I will teach my child kindness and how to not judge others (especially those whose situations I do not know or cannot understand).  In fact, thinking of it, I am a bit ashamed of one thing... that I let you drag me to your level and call you a name.  So, I take that back.  But, I suggest you take a good hard look at the way you live because it will rub off on your child and that would be a shame.  Give your LO a chance to grow up kind and informed.  That is that.  FACT.

I won't be back - don't really care what else you have to say.  I have wasted enough of my time with this post's drivel.

Who the HELL do you think you are to be making ignorant offensive comments and judging the other women on this board?

Guess what sweetie? Not everyone WANTS to breastfeed, nor do they want to spend half their lives washing cloth diapers. There is nothing wrong with formula feeding and disposable diapering your child...if you are giving your child nourishment and keeping them dry, you are a good mother, end of story.

Maybe you are content to spend you entire day as a domestic goddess with a baby attached to your boob, but its not for everyone. As for daycare, some of us actually received an education, and want to make use. There is nothing wrong with being a stay at home mom, but dont DARE sit there and call the rest of us selfish for wanting a career.

The ideal situation would be breast milk from the breast, expressed milk, expressed milk from a donor and then formula. However, financially donor milk isn't an option for many families.

Whoever said doctors recommend supplements for EBFed babies- that's completely false. EBF babies don't need any supplements at all. In fact, that's the #1 way to cause BFing problems.
