Flying with a Pump?

Hi ladies--

quick question--has anyone flown with their pump?  I'm taking a weekend trip to Philly in a month and was going to take my pump since LO won't be with me...it's a Medela PISA.  I haven't called the airline yet but thuoght I'd check here first to see if anyone had any experience with this.

 Thanks!

Re: Flying with a Pump?

  • Do you plan to pump on the plane?  IIdon't have experience with this but I would think that taking a pump would be similar to taking a laptop.

  • I flew into philly a few weeks ago with my pump. I had no issues with my local airport or philly. If you are bringing milk home with you, in philly there is a family/medically necessary liquids security line. Breastmilk is considered a medically necessary liquid, so you can go in this line (it is much shorter than the regular security line). Just look for green signs and declare your milk when going thru the screening part.

  • Ive flown with my pump a couple times in my carry-on. I just put the luggage through (you dont have to take it out like a laptop or anythign). If you are bringing a cooler for the milk just let security know before you put it on the belt. I have had no trouble at all even with the cooler empty with just the ice packs in it on the way there for my trip. A lot of airports (including philly & orlando) have a family line which also includes medical liquids - a lot of times this line is shorter so you can ask to go in it. Most times they dont even open my cooler or anything - Ive only had them inspect it once and they just opened it and looked in (they cant touch your milk!).
  • Thank you!!  I don't plan to pump on the plane but I will have milk coming home with me--I never would have thought to look for a medical liquid line...Thank you for that info!!!
  • I flew with my pump ... not a big deal. I had my purse and pump ... those were my two carry on items.

On the way home when I had milk with me, I had to declare it to security.. also not a big deal. :)

  • I travel for work alot and my pump has many frequent flier miles.  lol

I just pat it as it goes thru security and say "I have breastmilk" they just nod and that's it.  Lately though, airports are very inconsistant with checking it.  SOmetimes it goes right thru (even with 120 ounces in my bag!) and sometimes they make me go to the little explosives scanner machine.

EIther way, it's no big deal.  (although I did have a ticket taker last month tell me I had to move aside and consolidate my 3 items.  Purse/pump and small suitcase.  I patted my pump (PISA Advanced)  and said, it's a breast pump which is a medically nessesary device.  SHe said "that doesn't look like any breast pump I've seen"  I spouted back that it's pretty standard and it also has a cooler in it full of milk, did she want to see? and just kept walking thru onto the plane.
