Success after IF

Thermometer question......

What kind of thermometer do you have? Mouth? Rectal? Ear? There are so many at BRU and I don't know which one to get.......Honestly, I'm not sure if we can handle the rectal (is it better than I'm thinking?), so what is the next best/most accurate one?

Thanks!

Re: Thermometer question......

  • You want a rectal thermometer.  It's the most accurate.  And it's only weird the first time you take their temp that way; after that it's no big deal.  Our pediatrician always wants to know rectal temp.

This exactly. Its really not as bad as you are thinking. I think we have the Safety 1st Rectal one and the tip is very soft.

  • I have no clue either. I don't want a rectal - but hear they are the best.
  • Rectal therm. is the most accurate.  It's not as bad as you think (you only have to put it in there like a half inch and there's generally a little ridge on therm so you know how far is good/not too far.

And if you get into a high fever situation you'll really want to know what their temp truly is.  Ear, axillary and temporal artery temps are not as reliable.

  • They sell one that has different tips (rectal, underarm and mouth) so it can grow with the baby. Honestly, rectal isn't as bad as it sounds. It was weird the first time, but K didn't even seem to notice it was in there. The tip is very short.
  • Ditto about the rectal therm.  I promise, it's not awful.

My pedi said don't even bother getting the ear therm because it is not accurate on a young baby.

Ditto again. We got a Red Cross ear therm as a shower gift and it's a piece of crap. It routinely says E's temp is about 5-7 lower than it really is. I've gone back to rectal for now.

We have a Vick's rectal one that I like.  Quick and the tip lets you know how far in to put it.  It's really not that bad.

  • We just got a temporal artery thermometer that's really fast and really accurate (supposedly as accurate as rectal). We'll probably get a rectal one too, just in case our pedi would specifically request a rectal temp.

  • I got a rectal thermometer.  It only takes 2 seconds to get an accurate reading (so says the package) so hopefully it won't be too difficult to use.  I've always heard the rectal temp. is the most acccurate.
