Coumadin before pregnancy

Hi I was wondering if anyone has/had a clotting disorder before pregnancy?  I am on coumadin now and will be for the rest of my life and wondered if there is anyone out there that has a similar health problem.  My fiance and I would love to have children but I'm scared of the risk involved with this blood disorder.  They tell me that lovenex is safe while pregnant.  Would love to hear from anyone that has experinece on this topic.

Yes, this is pretty common here.  I have Factor V Leiden and MTHFR and have been on both Coumadin and Lovenox since my blood clot was diagnosed 6 months ago.  I have talked to many high-risk specialists who tell me that getting pregnant is an option, but I will be monitored VERY closely when I decide to get pregnant.

There are many women on here who can give you tons of advice and support, so I hope others will chime in!

I have lupus anticoagulant and homozygous MTHFR.  I've not had a blood clot, but my hemotologist has told me that WHEN (not if) I get my first one I'll be on coumadin for the rest of my life.

I have 2 healthy children (3 on the way) thanks to lovenox/heparin.  Every pregnancy is risky and a bit scary, and I've been advised not to have any more after this one.  But it is definitely possible.

    Good luck!

I have protein C and S Deficiency and was diagnosed 4 years ago after I had several blood clots go to my lungs and also one to leg.  This all happened after an outpatient knee surgery.  I am very interested in talking to those that have a similar health issue and to hear what it was like to be on lovenex/heparin while pregnant and after.  Did you have complications during the pregnancy or during delivery?  How did you deliver vag or cs?  Which is recommended when you are prone to clots?  I know these ultimatly need to be asked to a dr. but right now I'm not at that point just interested in what the future holds for us.

I lost 3 pregnancies before diagnosis.  With DS I had a great pregnancy, I started out on Heparin but had an allergic reaction so was switched to lovenox.  Heparin is MUCH cheaper but is also 2 shots a day.  You can't get an epidural/spinal on lovenox so I had to deal with the heparin from 35 weeks on.  Heparin has a shorter effective time (thus twice as many shots) and there is something that can counter it if you deliver before it wears off (12 hours).  I did hemorrhage after his birth but it was thought that was b/c he was huge, at that point it had been 24 hours since my last heparin injection.

With DD I had a scheduled c/s.  OB said it would be easier to control potential bleeds among other reasons.  It was great, no problems.

This one is another scheduled c/s.  I just found out Monday that this baby has a blood clot in the placenta (exactly what I'm on lovenox to avoid).  My perinatologist is fairly sure that there was a bleed in the placenta and the clot was to stop the bleed (and thus a good thing), but can't be 100% sure.  So now I'm pretty worried, I've never had a complication with the baby before.

I am on Lovenox for FVL and MTHFR like many others here...it's safe during pregnancy!

I developed a massive blood clot while pregnant with DD.  I was put on Heparin while on hospital bedrest for a week and then sent home on Lovenox.  It was tough at first but became second nature.  There were no issues whatsoever.  After delivery I was put on Heparin, then Lovenox and Coumadin together.  Once my INR was stable I was just on Coumadin and still am.  I tested positive for a clotting disorder and a mutation after I had DD but then they re-tested and it was negative.  My doctor is testing again after it's been 6 months and we'll go from there.

Good luck!  There are TONS of ladies here dealing with very similar issues.

OP- I had a pulmonary embolism 9 years ago, but do not have any disorders.  I was on coumadin for 7 months, but stopped bc I had a number of complications.  While pg I take Lovenox until 36 weeks, then switch to Heparin 2x a day, until 48 hours before I am induced at 39 weeks.  They said they want the thinners out of my system.  From what I understand a c/s is fine as well....As long as the thinners are out of your system.  If not, you have to be under general anesthetic.
