cake ball help needed

My sisters are spending the night and we are practicing making cake balls for my shower.  No matter what we do we can't get the coating even.  We have tried both the candy melts and chocolate bark.  Neither one is smooth.  I know there are a lot of women here who have made these.  How do you get them so smooth?

  • I've never made them, but know they have some at bakerella.com

  • Do you mean that the chocolate/candy is not melting smooth? If so, how are you melting it? I finally broke down and used a double boiler last time and it worked! Perfectly smooth chocolate.
  • You can also do (I think it's) 2 cups chocolate chips and 2 T shortening in a double broiler.  If you don't have one, boil water in a pot and and stick a bowl over it.  It does the same thing.  Just make sure you don't scorch the chocolate.
  • We melted it and it was smooth.  Problem is that we couldn't get it smooth on the cake itself.  We dipped the balls in the chocolate and rolled it around.  Scooped it out using a fork.  There are ridges on the balls and  the chocolate pools around the bottom and forms a puddle.  We followed the directions on bakerella but just can't get them to look as smooth and perfectly round as she does.

  • I have never done these before but I feel like what you are describing is probably from the chocolate not being warm enough. Make sure its pretty runny because if it's already starting to set it will not get as smooth.
