Hi! And a woven question (back carries)

I am new around here and wanted to say hello!  I've been posting a little and lurking quite a bit on a few boards but I've really enjoyed reading here.  I feel like you guys give good, detailed information in your responses and I've learned quite a bit thus far.  So thanks for creating an inviting environment!

My little guy loves being worn and I've been reading the posts about wovens and am interested in the versatility.  While I do have a Beco, I like that you can do a high back carry with the woven (especially right now while he is smaller).  But here is where I get concerned.  I have a Moby and we never got very comfortable with it.  I was always worried that he wasn't quite secure enough, but that could be from the stretch of the material and me not having it tight enough.  If I was slightly wrap challenged with the Moby will it not be any better with a woven?  And are the back carries a 2 person job or would it be something I could do if DH isn't around to help me?

TIA!

  • Hi! Welcome!

I loved my Moby, but love my woven wraps even more- I think if you had trouble getting the Moby tight enough, wovens might be more up your ally, b/c they don't stretch, and the whole point of wrapping is to do so fairly tightly (obviously w/out choking LO!).

As far as back carries go, once you get the hang of them, they're a one person job. I put DD on my back in parking lots, stores, wherever we might be. I usually get looks (one guy commented "you're a pro at that!") and am sure people are like, OMG, she's got her baby on her back, she's going to drop that baby! Once I got the hang of it though, I've never once felt it was unsafe to put her up on my back. I started out though leaning over my bed, just in case I dropped her (never have, not even in the beginning)!

I did seek help from DH the first couple of times- I'll even have him help me now to readjust the fabric over her back if I'm having a particularly difficult time doing it on my own for some reason (a double hammock usually requires a bit of assitance for some reason, but a rucksack carry I can easily do on my own, and this is what I use when I'm out and about b/c it's easiest to get her up in). You can find some inexpensive woven's on the babywearer.com's FSOT forum- Ellaroo's are pretty and thin and usually run less than $50.

I will look over at that site!  Thank you!  Do they have information over there on how to do the various carries or if not how can I learn about the different ways to wrap?  If it's easy then I'd love to get one and try it out!

BTW, my DS is Aiden too :)

  • Yes, and I actually have quite a few bookmarked. My favorite back carry for when DD was a newborn was this one https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RE4eP4WlZzc Doing a rucksack or double hammock is difficult until their little legs get long enough that you can cross the tails underneath them, but this allows you to go over top their legs and kind of bind them to you legs in. DD actually hated this carry though, but she hated having her legs in for any carry. She didn't start to like back carries until I could do a ruck.
  • A woven will be much more secure than a stretchy wrap, especially if you do a double hammock carry (I also have a hard time getting this one right, but I guess it's a practice issue)  As pp said, thebabywearer.com has great info, including carry instructions, wrap reviews, seller reviews, and used wraps for sale.  Also, take a look at ncbelle's website:
