Breastmilk question: is this safe to reuse?

My DS didn't finish 3 oz of his last bottle today, so DC sent it back home with him. They heat his bottles in a warm bath of water before feeding it to him, so the breastmilk has already been heated. I put it in the fridge when I got home.

Is it safe to reuse this to add to tomorrow's bottles? I have never had this come up before, DS usually always finishes his bottles.

TIA for any replies!

  • I would toss it ONLY because you said for use of TOMORROWS bottle

  • I wouldn't. I think you are okay to use it for the next feeding, asbinadmin a few hours later. If it happes again, use it for cereal or something, so it doesn't go to waste.

  • Once BM is heated it's suggested not to use it after two hours at room temp. That's what my LC told me anyway.

    I personally wouldn't.

  • I would if it were for another bottle today, but not for a bottle tomorrow.

  • Toss it.

It's ok to leave at room temp until next feeding...but not ok refridgerate after heating then heat again

It is fine to refrigerate and reuse at the next feeding. From kellymom:

If my baby doesn't finish a bottle of pumped breast milk can I save it for later? by Jan Barger, R.N., M.A., IBCLC

"...Based on this study, which admittedly needs to be done on a larger scale, it would seem to me that expressed breast milk, fed to the baby, partially consumed, and then refrigerated, could be used for one more feeding no more than four hours later. That's probably fairly conservative. One of the best tests of whether the milk is spoiled is to do what you do with cow's milk: Smell it and taste it!"
