We registered for and received several packages of Gerber premium prefolds. I intend to use these for burp cloths. We also received a package of birdseye prefolds and I was thinking of taking them back to the store. Here are my questions:
Should I keep the extra package? The packages are sets of 6. Can we get away with just 12 burp cloths? Or will we really need more?
Also, why is it that Gerber prefolds are not great for cloth diapering? I heard it was because they are made of polyester, but on the package it says 100% cotton. I wasn't planning to use Gerber prefolds for cloth diapering, but just wondering why they don't work as well as say GMD's.
Thanks!
Re: Gerber prefolds questions
I'd probably take them back, if you're going to the store. Or you can re-gift at another baby shower
I didn't CD when I had a newborn, but I did use the Gerber prefolds as burp cloths and I think 12 is plenty, since we did laundry pretty often when DD was really young. Now that I have GMD's I can see the difference--GMDs seem SO much more absorbent. Plus, Gerber doesn't have the size selection that GMD does.
On an unrelated note, I see you're in Brazos County! Where? I went to A&M
We have 36 (3 x12 packs) of the Gerber PFs that we use as burp cloths/bottle wipers (from the warmer)/counter cloths. They were gifts with no receipts, so we kept them figuring too many was better than too few.
We use maybe six of them in any given laundry cycle. DS used to spit up a lot, but it was never so much that him wearing a bib wasn't enough. We kept one in the diaper bag for a long time for "just in case" situations, I think we needed it maybe twice in six months. We have never, ever, used them for their original purpose (well, secondary I guess if diapers are their intended purpose).
I would definitely return some if you can. You'll be doing laundry so much anyway, a dozen really should be plenty. Get something you know you can use with the money/credit, and if you find later you need more, the store will still be selling them.

Gig 'em!! DH and I graduated in 2004. How fun to still be there
So are you going to CD your LO? It's always interesting to talk with other Texas mamas who do...there's not too many of us!
We received a bunch of hand-me-town Gerber or some sort of PFs. Some were birdseye and some seemed thicker and tighter woven but are no where as thick as diaper-service quality prefolds.
DD didn't spit up a lot, we used a whole big three burp cloths for the entire spitty period. These handed-down prefolds are now house rags - clean counters, pick up stuff off the floor, clean the bathroom.
Return them if you can.
DS had reflux and spit up a TON. We never needed more than 12 in one laundry cycle, but there were times i did laundry JUST for burp cloths.
we tried to use the gerber organic PFs, and they were soaked instantly, and DS actually horrible diaper rash the few times we tried them, as they seemed to hold the pee right against his skin instead of wicking the moisture away.
Thanks y'all! I will be returning them.
We actually just moved back here. It's so different not being a student here! Yes, we will be CDing...obviously not a popular choice here in TX. However, there is a CD store here in town now!
Isnt the store right across from the mall? I think Cloud 9?
I live in Texas too!
