Our favorite baby name so far for a little girl is:
Maille May Brown
My question is: If you saw the name Maille, how would you think to pronounce it?
In researching this name, every source says something different about its origin, meaning and even pronunciation. I know how I want to pronounce it but I'm wondering if I would be condemning my LO to a life of correcting others pronunciation all the time!
Re: How would you pronounce this?
May-lee
really with May???
yep
Oh my goodness. I would totally pause and have to resay the name 100 times in my head before uttering a guess at May-ill-lee?
So, yeah, you will be condemning your child filled with a life of corerction.
After 7 years trying to concieve, 3 failed IUIs and 2 failed IVFs, my third IVF was a success!
My Christmas baby turned into a turkey bird! Dillon Richard was born at 34 weeks, 5 days on November 28, 2009 after 10 weeks on bedrest for preeclampsia.

This.
I used to know a girl who had a sister with this name. I was always confused by the way she pronounced it. "Moll-ya." They pretty much always called her "Molly." I don't see that from looking at the spelling, but that's how they said it.
How do you want to pronounce it?
where do you get the long i sound from ai...ai is the long a sound! As in rain, train, trait, Spain
This. The names together sound like a bluegrass song, yuck.
I'm guessing because of words like chai, names like Kai, etc. I would honestly never think this immediately, though.
after anovulatory diagnosis and TTC for 1 1/2yrs with several medicated cycles and one chemical pregnancy, we have our first bundle of joy!
IT'S A GIRL!
#2 EDD 2/5/13 dx with anti-BIG E antibody, seeing a MFM
I don't take one single minute for granted.
Haha yes that would be awful if it was pronounced May-lee!
Well the way we want to pronounce it is: My-lee
The middle name has to be May, because it is a family middle name that will be in its 6th generation.
I've also looked at the spelling MAILE, with only one L. Do you guys think it is more likely to be pronounced My-lee if spelled this way instead of MAILLE with two L's?
This - I was thinking the exact same thing.
yes, I guess that could be the case. I wasn't even thinking about that...obviously
! This is why a name like this is bad. No one will ever pronounce it correctly. See, we can't figure it out!
my-lee.
I'd use a different spelling if you wanted to avoid confusion on pronunciation, no matter how you say it.

I would never have gotten My-lee out of Maille. Nor would I have gotten it from Maile. Maille = My since it looked French to me. Maile = Mail. If you want it to be pronounced My-lee, why not go with Miley? As in Miley Cyrus whose name is pronounced My-lee?
This exactly

ditto.
The reason I liked the name MAILLE in the first place, with that specific spelling, is because my fiance's first name is a very unique Irish name. So when looking for names for our baby, I wanted to choose an Irish name and I found Maille in a list of Irish baby names.
What to do, what to do....
hmmm, I did find this!:
https://inogolo.com/pronunciation/Maile
I was gonna say mail-ee. Like "I'm going to get the mail, with an E". Either that or Mal-ee.
what to do...if you want it pronounced correctly, and not have your child have to correct everyone who reads her name, spell it differently or choose another pretty Irish name. How about Fallon, Reagan, Brigit, Dierdre, Kaitlin, Taryn?
If you want it pronounced My-lee then why dont you just spell it Miley or Mylee? IMO your making the name too confusing because automatically you have all these ladies thinking it is pronounced different ways. Too me it says May-lee. Trust me i know from experience, my mother named me Sharayah and it is pronounced SHA-RAY-UH. People use the Y and call me SHA-RYE-UH. It was not fun correcting it, please dont make it confusing for her.
At first glance I would pronounce it My-Lee.. Like Miley Cyrus.
It will be mispronounced over and over. Your call!
I am with most of the other posters. If you are using Mae, I just don't think Maille goes good with it. And it makes me think of Braille, and even with the "fancy" spelling, it still sounds a little hickish. I do love Mae for a middle name though, just not with that fn.
I could be wrong, but I think the Irish pronunciation of the name Maille/Maile is MOLLY.
If you want an Irish name I would pick a different name.
FYI -
Prounounced "MAY-lee," Maille has the same old-fashioned Irish charm as Molly but with a more complex spelling.
i honestly spent a long time looking at this name to figure out how i would say it. i settled on "MAY-lee". but with that i didn't even feel like it was "right".
to be honest...i wouldnt not even think "MY-lee". yep for that i think you need Mylie - for lack of confusion.
Horrible.
In English, nothing about that name says "Miley."
It says possibly Mail, May-lee, or Mallie, because frankly it's hard to see that there is an I before the L.
Really, it's a very, very poor choice of name.
And the middle name May or Mae is so fuucked out.
No. Also agree w/ others, don't use Miley w/ May, sounds very redneck.
Re: the spelling of Maile (w/one L)... it depends. Since I am from Hawaii, I would instantly pronounce it My-Lee because it is a type of lei that is VERY common here.
It would be cool to name your daughter that if you were honoring something Hawaiian (a honeymoon, a wedding, etc).
If you are looking for Irish origins, then I think you would need to find another spelling or what have you.
