Taking down some of the child proofing stuff.
My kids are almost 4 (in June) and 2 and on the smaller size. My house was built in the early 1970's and the bars on the stair railings are not up to current code so we have mesh on them (bought from BRU for this reason). I hate how it looks and we would love to take it down but I'm nervous about my girls getting their heads stuck. My younger DD's head measurement is just about 18 inches all the way around. The bars on the stairs are around 4.5 inches and others are closer to 5inches.
We are going to take the gates down from the stairs as we never use them anymore (other than to keep the dog out)!!!
Everything else is staying (door locks and stuff like that). These are really the only thing that drive me nuts since it is the 1st thing you see when you come to my house.
Re: How old where your kids when you started...
DD will be 4 in two weeks and we'd be fine un proofing everything.
But DS is an ox, we still need the gates on the stairs, etc for him. He's 2.
I think Emelia was around 2 when we took everything down. Once I felt she could walk up and down stairs by herself I took the gates down. Doorknob protectors were never really on becasue she figured out how to take them off. I still kept an eye on her, but didn't feel like I had to be right behind her. So, at the age where I felt I didn't have to chase her or be her shadow and she was safe enough to be in a room alone for a few minutes.
We never did any child proofing at all. Bad parents!
We still have the stair gate, and I don't know when we will take it down. DD knows how to go down the stairs properly, but I like having it up since DS gets up in the night, and it's one more thing for us to hear him before he goes downstairs.
I have outlet covers and that's about it for the rest of the stuff.
