cradle cap

Anyone have suggestions on how to get rid of DD's cradle cap.  Currently, I bathe her with Johnson and Johnson Baby Wash and use a little of the baby oil on her head after the bath.  This is clearly not working!

Re: cradle cap

  • I used J&J baby shampoo (the wash doesn't work on the hair) with a soft toothbrush.  Scrub away!  It took about 3 or 4 days to go away.

  • My dd uses J&J and has it too!  I'm quitting the J&J, and actually just posted too.  I've heard raves about California baby, but it's super pricey.  Looks like the ladies below recommend Aveeno, which is what I think I'm going to try.

I do the oil occasionally (I've done it like three times in the past two weeks), but before the bath I let it soak in for about 20 minutes.

I do this a few times a week now - before her baths, I use my nail or a comb to try to get some of the flakes up, and it's been helping.  While it's been getting better with the massaging, I'm still switching bath products.

Her doctor and everywhere I've read just says it takes time.  It's mostly just gross to us unfortunately.

  • You're in luck, I just got back from the pedi and asked a question about this...baby oil or olive oil. Try not to wash it every day because it is drying out his scalp...at least that's what my pedi said.

Oooh, never heard about the soft toothbrush... May have to try.

  • I put Gentle Naturals Baby Eczema in the dry hair.  Then take a comb and go through the hair let it sit in hair till bath time later in day.  then wash head and add a little more in.  take a comb and comb the crud out.  It worked in one washing.  It was a process.  Hope this makes sense.

  • Our pedi suggested Neutrogena T-Gel for cradle cap. It's dandruff shampoo. We use it 2xs a week... it seems to have helped, I guess?

DD doesn't have much hair, so for the most part, I just put aquaphor on the bad spots and that helps a lot.

before a bath, I put olive oil on her head and then brushed it with that brush they give you in the hospital.  It worked great on her eyebrows when she had it but not as good on her head.

A close friend of mine is a pediatric nurse at Vanderbilt in Nashville and he told me to put a tiny bit of Selsen Blue on a rag and wash her scalp then brush it.  TONS of flakes came off with doing this!  I mean TONS!

  • California Baby works and is worth the price.  I used the body wash/shampoo and the calendula cream.  I put the cream on his cradle cap (he had it on his head and between his eyebrows).  It went away in a matter of days.  Once it was gone, I only had to use the body wash/shampoo to keep it away.  It is all natural and organic as well.  Before using California Baby I tried olive oil and baby oil and got no results.

  • Mustela newborn foaming shampoo works wonderfully to clear up cradle cap fast, but when you can you should use all natural products on baby and skip the johnson and johnson and aveeno crap, they are junk. Olive oil does work, it just takes longer. Cradle cap really only bothers the parents, it will clear up on its own.

  • Thanks so much for all of your help ladies!  (btw, I know it is not a big deal & I did mention it to my dr. at her last appt. and she said it will eventually go away...I was just curious if there was anything that helped it.)
