Success after IF

Anyone take P17 alpha hydroxy progesterone throughout pregnancy?

My OB mentioned it to me yesterday.  I was not really that preterm--36w6d, however, i did have a scare at 34w in which i came very close to delivering.

My OB said i am in the "gray" area, and he is going to talk to his partner concerning this.

I was just wondering if anyone had experience with it?

What week does it start?  Did it help with PTL at all?

  • I took it starting at 16 weeks and took the last shot at 35 weeks (norm is 36 but since we were planning on induction at 37 weeks my OB wanted it out of my system by then). It is just like PIO shots, in oil, same needles, et cetera (but different chemical makeup).

I think it helped me - with our first pregnancy (granted it was twins) I started having noticeable contractions at 14 weeks and braxton hicks pretty regularly thereafter, then delivered at 23 weeks. Second pregnancy w/ P17 shots I made it to my induction at 38 weeks. Each week as the shot wore off I would get more uterine irritability which woudl subside once I took the shot again (and my OB says that's typical). I still had contractions somewhat regularly starting at 28 weeks but never enough to change my cervix or anything.

I know Mrs. Reem took them w/ Ana too, and there are probably others on the High Risk board. Good luck!

  • I had bad PTL starting at 20 weeks with Trig so I am on p17. We started it at 16 weeks and as far as I know, it's pretty much the standard of care if you had preterm labor. You can either have a weekly IM shot of the suppositories. I opted for the suppositories because I didn't want to have to go into the office once a week for the shot - it's hard to drag Trig with me down there. Doc was dumbfounded as to why I would choose suppositories twice a day but I did it with my IUI and IVF cycles, it's not that bad, so why not?

I started it at 16 weeks and will continue to take it until 34-35 weeks.

I honestly don't see why they would start you now - that doesn't make any sense.

ETA: I totally misread your post - I thought you were saying you were 36 weeks now - sorry!

I take an IM shot (I do mine myself) once a week.  Due to the triplets, I am measuring ahead and my Peri didn't want to risk PTL with me.  The shots are easy and I am willing to do whatever it takes to keep Kate in as long as possible.

If you think you may have a risk for PTL, I would say do it as it isn't bad!

  • I took them starting at around 30 wks or so when I was having some contrax.  I was also started on brethene at that point as well.  My contrax never turned into PTL.  I stopped the pills and the shots at 36 wks and the boys were born 3 days later.  I know that my OB stopped the pills and the shots at 36 wks bc he felt that the side effects/ risks of the meds outweighed the pro of stopping labor at that point.

  • I was. I too was in the gray area of whether it would help. But my peri (yep, I see a peri for my pgs, even singleton ones due to a host of issues) really wanted me to try it in the hopes of getting my second pg closer to term. I started at 16 weeks and ended at 36 weeks. I had to have an induction and then a section at 38 1/2 weeks due to being breech - but wasn't really in labor even then.
  • I injected them myself from week 16 - 34. I did have a couple bouts of PTL but they were easy to stop with daily terb. I will say that the shots did make me cranky. I'd be b!tchy the day after the shot and the next two days. Then it would start wearing off and I'd be nice again.  lol! I also noticed toward the end of my pregnancy they started to be less effective. I'd have more BH and eventually did have that ptl. However...I also made it to 40wks exactly! Like others said, it's pretty much standard care for anyone delivering 36wks or earlier in a previous pregnancy. It's said to work in 1/3 pregnancies and can't hurt even if it doesn't help. There's some good info on the march of dimes website. that's were I went when I was making the decision whether or not to do the injections.
